Job Description

Summary

This job is for a firefighter who also works as a paramedic in the U.S. Marine Corps, handling emergencies like fires, medical crises, rescues, and hazardous situations on bases in California.

It involves providing urgent medical care, fighting structural and wildland fires, and maintaining equipment to keep people safe.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in emergency response, strong physical fitness, and a passion for high-stakes teamwork in military or public safety settings.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07 or GS-08 in emergency medical response, including CPR, ALS, airway management, and patient transport
  • Experience in rescue operations such as high/low angle rescue, trench/confined space rescue, and auto extrication
  • Proficiency in structural and wildland firefighting, hazardous materials response, and airfield/aircraft emergencies (for GS-09)
  • Ability to perform invasive medical procedures like cricothyrotomy, endotracheal intubation, and pleural decompression
  • Certification as a paramedic or equivalent, with required certificates submitted with resume
  • Participation in daily training for fire protection, prevention, and specialized rescue teams (e.g., swift water, dive, boat)
  • Skills in maintaining emergency equipment, fire apparatus, ambulances, and conducting fire inspections

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Providing emergency medical response and treatment (e.g., Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); basic, intermediate, and advanced life support (ALS); airway management, emergency childbirth, mass casualty triage), rescue operations (e.g., high and low angle rescue, trench confined space rescue, auto extrication) and transporting emergency personnel and patients safely to emergency room.

GS-09: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Failure to provide the required documents will render you not eligible for consideration. Major Duties:

  • You will administer multiple established emergency medicine techniques to minimize life threatening conditions.
  • You will maintain care of emergency equipment (e.g., backboards, suction devices, splints, stretchers, oxygen delivery systems, monitoring equipment, specialized kits and bags) to ensure safety upon treating patients.
  • You will assess a patient systematically to identify the nature, extent, and seriousness of the patient's condition.
  • You will provide invasive airway procedures (e.g., needle or surgical cricothyrotomy, pleural decompression, endotracheal intubation, nasal intubation) to establish an airway during life threatening situations.
  • You will participate in daily training/ instruction covering all phases of fire protection and prevention.
  • You will periodically perform as a member of swift water rescue, confined space rescue, dive rescue and boat teams or providing direct support as part of the overall effort.
  • You will perform routine maintenance of fire pumps, ladders, fire hoses and specialized tools/equipment used on assigned apparatus, as well as routine care and maintenance of ambulances.
  • You will perform fire prevention/protection inspection duties to include maintenance of fire extinguishing systems.
