Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes Developing training requirements in accordance with fire prevention guidelines; Preparing lesson plans and summaries for general training; and Performing firefighting activities, search and rescue, crash/rescue operations, responding to HAZMAT incidents and responding to medical emergencies.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-???????10).

Major Duties:

  • Plans, develops, implements, reviews, and evaluates the comprehensive fire protection training, safety, and hazardous material handling (to include chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives; CBRNE) programs at the installation.
  • Assigns, directs, and reviews the work of other staff members who administer training program activities. Observes training being conducted by other instructors to ensure compliance with current procedures.
  • Oversees, develops lesson plans for recurring proficiency training utilizing methods following established guidelines of the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA). NFPA, DOD 6055.6M Firefighter certification program.
  • Trains personnel in subject matter areas using computer software.
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly, semiannual, and annual training schedules for approval. Prepares annual training budget.
  • Plans and schedules work to meet program goals, and objectives.
  • Conducts recurring proficiency training in each functional area of fire protection.
  • Serves department as Safety Officer. Conducts live (announced) aircraft crash fire, training, HAZMAT, and structural exercises.
  • Conducts unannounced structural and crash rescue exercises in coordination with the Fire Chief.
