Full Job Description

The Ethics Assistant works under the direction of the Administrator for the Select Committee on Legislative Ethics. The position supports the nine-member Legislative Ethics Committee comprised of four legislators and five members of the public.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Ethics Assistant provides general office support to the Ethics Committee and Administrator, assists with training, and provides guidance to legislators, legislative employees, and other covered employees to comply with the provisions of the Ethics Act AS 24.60.

General office support duties include:

  • answering phones, responding to emails, and greeting guests
  • preparing correspondence, internal documents, and reports,
  • maintaining office records,
  • ordering office supplies,
  • supporting Ethics Committee meetings,
  • copying/collating/mailing committee meeting packets,
  • processing committee member pre- and post-travel required documents,
  • recording ethics committee meetings and drafting meeting minutes,
  • performing other tasks as needed.

Compliance assistance includes:

  • reviewing/processing ethics disclosures and preparing them for publishing,
  • maintaining ethics training records for covered employees,
  • assisting with preparation of topical bi-monthly ethics newsletter,
  • answering questions about the requirements and prohibitions in the Ethics Act,
  • monitoring Ethics Office website and coordinating updates and fixes,
  • assisting with preparation of annual handbooks and publications,
  • assisting with mandatory ethics training,
  • responding to other needs as they arise.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel. Working knowledge of PowerPoint, a plus.
  • Excellent communication and people skills with internal and external clients.
  • Experience in and ability to research detailed and nuanced issues in written/online statutes and produce written recommendations or findings.
  • Strong organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task, learn quickly, be self motivated, and work well individually and as a team member.

Requirements

Alaska residency (and) High School Graduation or GED (and) two years office clerical/secretarial experience.

Preferred qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree.

Paralegal or research experience.

Social media page development and maintenance experience

Location: 1500 W Benson, Suite 220, Anchorage AK 99503

Schedule: This position is a permanent 37.5-hour a week position. Travel to Juneau during the legislative session is likely.

Special Note:
This is a fully exempt job class under AS 39.25.11(3).

Positions in the Ethics Committee are required to be politically neutral.

This position accesses sensitive information. A Confidentiality Agreement is required.

The Ethics Act (AS 24.60) requires legislators, legislative employees, and public members of the Ethics Committee to disclose for the public certain activities and associations in which they engage, e.g., board memberships, close economic associations, and state contracts.
