Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of health educators to improve nutrition, physical activity, and safety in child care programs across South Carolina, including supervising staff, conducting inspections, reviewing menus, and delivering training to providers.

Job Duties:

The ES Health Educator will lead, supervise, and direct the work of the ES ABC Quality Health Educator team, as a supervisor, while maintaining regional technical assistance and Health & Safety inspection caseload.

Provide mentoring and coaching to ES ABC Quality Health Educators. Provide information and details about staff performance to program management.

Co-lead the Grow Outdoors SC program and launch the ABC Quality recognition Program. Responsible for the menu reviews from across the state.

Develop and deliver training to various stakeholders, including ABC Quality staff.

Develop or revise ABC Quality standards and policies that focus on nutrition, physical activity, and other relevant content areas.


  • Supervise health educators to ensure coordinated and organized efforts related to the integration of nutrition, physical activity, and wellness strategies within ABC Quality and across the Division of Early Care and Education.

Lead and provide basic coordination of the Grow Outdoors SC program in partnership with SC Department of Public Health.

Assist programs in transforming and naturalizing their outdoor play and learning environments utilizing best practices from the Natural Learning Initiative and Early Childhood Health Outdoors (ECHO) initiative.


  • Conduct program menu review from regions across the state; provide thoughtful recommendations to assist programs as they improve the nutritional offerings of meals and/or snacks. Update ABC Quality menu standards and guidance as needed to maintain high integrity and accountability.

  • Conduct Health & Safety facility inspections (10-15 per year) for License Exempt programs mainly in the Upstate but potentially from across the state as needed. Oversee, centralize, and streamline the inspection process being conducted by the ABC Quality Health Education team.

  • Provide technical assistance on nutrition, physical activity, and health policies, and practices through site visits, email, or phone calls with child care programs; serve as a resources to child care programs promoting environmental changes to improve health, answer questions, develop strategies, make connections to available local resources, and for other program-initiated needs.

  • Coordinate with professionals within and outside the DSS agency serving child care programs to assure implementation of developmentally appropriate strategies and non-duplication of services; establish and support partnerships on implementing best practices.

  • Develop and deliver state, regional, and local level training, focused on nutrition, to child care providers on ABC Quality best practices for nutrition and health policies.

  • Obtain professional development as required.

Requirements

A Master's Degree in nutrition, health education, health promotion, and/or public health and three (3) years of community nutrition and/or health education experience with one (1) year as a supervisor.

Qualifications

Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) / Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) eligible; a Registered Dietitian; four years (4) or more of Community Nutrition or Health Education experience, and two (2) or more years as supervisor over other heath educators or registered dietitians.
