Job Description

Summary

This job involves operating trucks and machinery to handle tree removal, trimming, planting, and debris cleanup in city parks and public areas, along with basic equipment maintenance and assisting with community tree programs.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds and working in outdoor conditions
  • Knowledge of basic construction methods and practices
  • Preferred: Experience with tree trimming, maintenance, and operating tools like brush trucks, chippers, bucket trucks, chain saws, and pole saws

Full Job Description

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing skilled work operating light to heavy equipment used to excavate, load, transfer, brush, tree material, or other material in the maintenance or construction of parks, streets, and other public properties. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Hours
6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.; Monday - Friday. Shifts are subject to change to accommodate seasonal adjustments, evening coverage, weekends, and holiday shiftwork based on department needs.

Requirements

  • Operates a 10 cy or less dump trucks to and from work locations, construction sites, etc.
  • Removal of trees and proper tree trimming in Parks
  • Plant trees in Parks
  • Performs minor maintenance and service checks on equipment.
  • Assists with Urban Forestry outreach and tree adoptions
  • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor work related to various maintenance and construction activities.
  • May prepare a daily log of activities.
  • Cleans and removes debris from streets, parks, drainage, ditches, City parks, and other areas, frequently lifting materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Removes brush from drainage inlets.
  • Transports tools and equipment to and from work sites.
  • May assist in the placement of barricades, signs, flashers, and safety cones.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance:
  • One (1) year of experience operating light, medium, or heavy equipment or completion of an SA: Ready to Work CDL training program.
  • Must obtain a Valid Texas Commercial Class "B" Driver's License plus all required endorsements within six (6) months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of tree trimming, and maintenance.
  • Experience operating brush truck, chipper, bucket truck, chipper truck, chain saws and pole saws.
Applicant Information

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job.

One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months.

One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

    • Working conditions are primarily outside in a construction site environment with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, traffic construction dust, damp/wet surfaces, overhead power lines, high noise, oily surfaces, liquid asphalt, and lime.
