Job Description

Summary

This job involves operating heavy machinery to maintain parks, mow lawns, plant greenery, and handle construction tasks like laying sod or repairing playgrounds in Nashville's parks department.

It's a hands-on role for someone who enjoys outdoor work and leading small teams on weekends or projects.

A good fit would be a reliable person with basic education, some groundskeeping experience, and the ability to get a commercial driver's license quickly.

Key Requirements

  • Eighth grade education and at least one year of grounds maintenance experience
  • Valid Driver's License, with requirement to obtain Class A CDL within first 6 months
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment over 26,000 lbs. GVW, including boom trucks, skid steers, mini-excavators, bush hogs, stump grinders, chippers, mowers, and dump trucks with trailers
  • Skills in landscaping tasks such as grading athletic fields, laying sod, planting and cultivating flora, and using herbicides
  • Experience in maintenance activities like mixing and finishing concrete, trimming/removing trees and brush, and installing/repairing playgrounds, fences, and signs
  • Ability to lead weekend or project crews and act as supervisor when needed
  • Subject to random drug tests and must become a Tennessee resident within 6 months of employment

Full Job Description

This position is located in the Parks and Recreation Department. The Equipment Operator Sr. - Parks/Grounds & Landscaping operates large gasoline and/or diesel-powered equipment for digging, mowing, landscaping, transporting materials and equipment. Performs a variety of maintenance and construction activities. Performs related duties as required.

Requirements

Operates various equipment with a gross combined vehicle weight over 26,000 lbs. and/or towing a vehicle over 10,000 lbs.

GVW.Regularly Operates, Cleans, and Maintains all tools, equipment and various heavy equipment including but not limited to the following:Boom TrucksSkid SteerMini-ExcavatorsBush Hogs (Standard, Bat wing and Side Arm Bush Hogs)Stump GrindersChippersVarious mowers including the 5900 Large Area Mowers.Dump Trucks w/ Trailer.Grades and prepares athletic fields and courts.Loads trucks, lays sod and does related work for reclaiming and establishing turf area.

Mixes, pours, and finishes concrete.Waters, plants, transplants, and cultivates flora including using herbicides and chemicals.Works with a tree crew trimming and/or removing large trees and brush.Installs and repairs playground equipment, signs, fences, guardrails, and related items.Runs weekend crews.Runs project crews.Can be assigned duties of a supervisor when they are not available.

Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEEighth (8th) grade education and one (1) year of grounds maintenance experience LICENSE REQUIREDValid Driver License Note: Must obtain a Class A license in first 6 months and this position is subject to Random Drug tests.Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
