This job involves driving and operating large trucks and equipment to collect waste and recycling from curbside bins and public areas in Nashville, ensuring everything runs smoothly for the city's waste services.
A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience driving heavy vehicles, who is physically fit for outdoor work in tough conditions and comfortable handling routine paperwork.
It's ideal for reliable team players who can sometimes guide junior staff.
The Equipment Operator Senior - Waste operates larger and more complex equipment for transporting materials, as assigned. The incumbent will perform related duties as required.
Waste Services is responsible for weekly curbside waste and every other week curbside recycling collection for over 151,000 customers in the urban services district as well as collection of over 200 public litter baskets in the downtown Nashville corridor. The division also operates four convenience centers where residents of Davidson County can bring waste, recycling, bulk items, food waste, household hazardous waste, and other items for recycling or disposal and eight recycling drop-off locations available to residents who do not qualify for curbside recycling collection.Waste Services currently employs staff members working in collection, administration, customer service, education, landfill engineering, development review, and outreach.
Operates Equipment related to area of assignment.
Inspect equipment for proper operating condition before its operations.
Performs routine clerical duties such as completing route sheets, notices, service requests and other forms as necessary.
May train and direct the work of subordinates.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts associated with vehicle/equipment maintenance.
These include working in extreme temperatures, working around potentially dangerous equipment, moving parts, carts, or machines, working around grease and oil, and so forth.
The work area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated.
Work of this classification requires physical exertion such as: frequently lifting objects up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting heavy objects from 26 to 50 pounds yet seldom from 51 to 100 pounds; occasional crawling, frequent standing, walking, sitting, listening, talking, use of hands, driving, bending, climbing, squatting, push/pull seated and standing, and reaching above shoulder level.
The incumbent may be exposed to a variety of irritant chemicals, lubricants, and exhaust fumes.
Accordingly, employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, coats, goggles, gloves, or shields and to take other precautions as necessary to minimize risks of personal injury.
Eighth (8th) grade education and one (1) year of verifiable experience operating gasoline or diesel-powered equipment or vehicles.
Must have successfully demonstrated competence operating vehicles and/or equipment associated with this classification as specified on the position announcement.

LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid "Class B" or higher Commercial Driver License
