Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading efforts to protect Utah's historical and cultural sites while supporting the Utah National Guard's operations, splitting time between office planning and outdoor fieldwork like surveys and excavations.

You'll manage policies, budgets, and relationships with tribes and agencies to ensure legal compliance and preservation.

It's ideal for an experienced archaeologist or architectural historian who enjoys hands-on work in rugged terrain and has strong technical writing skills.

Key Requirements

  • Graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, architectural history, or related field (preferred)
  • For archaeologists: At least one year of professional experience and four months of supervised field/analytic experience in Utah archaeology
  • For architectural historians: Experience in research, restoration architecture, or historic preservation projects
  • Ability to obtain a Public Lands Policy Coordination Office (PLPCO) Principal Investigator permit within 6 months
  • Proficiency with NEPA analysis, Utah State Historic Preservation Office (UTSHPO) reporting standards, ArcGIS, and Microsoft Office
  • Physical ability to work in varying weather conditions and navigate steep, rocky terrain
  • Valid U.S. driver's license, ability to maintain State of Utah vehicle privileges, and clearance for DOD computer access

Are you a passionate archaeologist or architectural historian looking to apply your skills in a dynamic environment? The Utah National Guard is seeking a dedicated Cultural Resources Manager to lead our cultural resource program. In this pivotal role, you will balance high-level environmental planning with cultural resources management to ensure the preservation of Utah's rich history while supporting the Guard's mission.

What You Will Do:
This is not just a desk job. You will split your time between strategic planning and hands-on fieldwork.
  • Lead the Program: You will develop policies, manage and implement the Integrated Cultural Resource Management Plan (ICRMP), and ensure compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
  • Build Relationships: Represent the Utah National Guard in meetings with other agencies and manage vital consultations with Tribal governments.
  • Manage Resources: Oversee cultural resources contracts, including budgeting and scheduling, and ensure archaeological collections are curated according to federal standards (36 CFR Part 79).
  • Get Out in the Field: Plan and conduct investigations, including reconnaissance, intensive surveys, test excavations, and data recovery. You may supervise seasonal teams in the conduct of this fieldwork.
Who We Are Looking For:
The ideal candidate is a proactive professional with both Utah archaeology field work and technical writing skills, who meets the Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology, Architectural History, or Historic Architecture.

Required Qualifications:

  • Requirements: Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license, be able to maintain State of Utah vehicle privileges, and obtain clearance for DOD computer access.

Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS):
  • Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.
  • Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System.
    • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))
    • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.
  • Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.
Paid Time Off:
  • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
  • Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.
