About the Position: This position is located in the Engineering and Logistics Support Division of the Directorate of Operations and Logistics, Headquarters, United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM).

The Environmental Protection Specialist serves as USAFRICOM's senior subject matter expert on environmental issues across Africa and functions as the command's technical authority for theater environmental security and protection in a diverse and complex operational environment.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1.

Theater Environmental Planning and Operations: Developing and integrating environmental considerations into planning and execution of military operations; 2.

Environmental Policy and Regulatory Compliance: Developing, evaluating, and issuing environmental policy for military operations, and ensuring compliance across complex regulatory environments, including international and host nation standards; 3.

Environmental Security and Energy Program: Managing complex environmental security and energy programs across diverse lines of effort, such as environmental compliance, operational energy, and security cooperation; and 4.

Strategic Engagement and Advisory Support: Serving as an authoritative technical expert in leading collaborative working groups, advising on environmental matters to senior executive-level leaders, and leveraging stakeholders to influence policy and achieve strategic objectives.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-13).

Major Duties:

  • Provides expert oversight for environmental security planning by applying comprehensive technical and legal analysis of host-nation standards, international laws, and DoD guidance.
  • Develops plans, assesses compliance, and implements corrective actions to ensure Service Components meet DoD environmental security requirements for contingency operations.
  • Conducts in-depth research to identify and evaluate factors that may influence operational effectiveness in the field.
  • Establishes authoritative guidance for life-cycle environmental surveys to identify site conditions that could affect operational outcomes.
  • Delivers briefings to senior leaders across USAFRICOM, DoD agencies, the State Department, other federal organizations, and foreign governments to inform environmental security decision-making.
