Full Job Description

This vacancy is for a GS-0028-9, Environmental Protection Specialist located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S.

Coast Guard, BASE LOS ANGELES LONG BEACH FACILITIES ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT -F in SAN PEDRO, California.

To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the federal sector.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis.

Assisting in the organization, preparation, and delivery of annual formal installation Participating in the training and education of personnel at all levels on regulation requirements, environmental protection matters, sustainability efforts, and environmental program goals and objectives Supporting the development of budget requests and generating supporting documentation and justification for program resource requirements OR Have successfully completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B.

or J.D., if related. OR A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

You will serve as an Environmental Protection Specialist and be responsible for supporting all aspects of the unit's environmental management system (EMS) / compliance management plan (CMP) and to ensure environmental program activities and operations comply with applicable laws, statutes, regulations, Executive Orders (EO), and Departmental/Agency directives, instructions, and policies.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.

Typical work assignments include: Participating in the preparation of written plans and schedules and providing input for setting milestones for accomplishing program goals.

Conducting inspections of installation facilities and equipment, internal audits of installation activities and operations, ensuring hazardous waste storage facilities/ areas and hazardous material distribution centers are properly managed.

Collecting data for incorporation into established environmental program metrics system.

Participating in the review of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for a variety of projects (to be procured by contract) in support of the environmental program.

Advising higher graded specialists, supervisors, and operating officials when directed on matters concerning environmental compliance and pollution prevention programs.

Operation of a forklift for accumulation and distribution of Hazardous Materials throughout the facility and organization of the 90-day and satellite accumulation areas.
