This vacancy is for a GS-0028-9, Environmental Protection Specialist located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S.
Coast Guard, BASE NEW ORLEANS FACILITIES ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT -F in NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana.
To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the federal sector.
Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis.
Understanding of the environmental regulatory and other legal requirements applicable to installation activities and operations; with emphasis on and expertise in the areas of solid and hazardous waste management, air and water environmental media, and spill prevention and response regulations, policies, and procedures.
Participating in assigned program area installation visits by officials of regulatory agencies, local/community governing bodies, department/agency representatives and officials, and consultants - assesses reports, implements commensurate corrective action plans, monitors and tracks required corrective actions.
Identifying environmental compliance issues, requirements, and areas of concern within assigned program areas; develops operational controls and courses of action (COAs) to mitigate risks and enhance environmental stewardship.

You will serve as a/an Environmental Protection Specialist and will serve as an environmental point of contact, supporting all aspects of the unit's environmental management system (EMS) / compliance management plan (CMP).
The position provides critical efforts to enhance unit initiatives to ensure environmental program activities and operations precisely and proactively comply with applicable laws, statutes, regulations, Executive Orders (EOs), and Departmental / Agency directives, instructions, and policies; are protective of the natural, cultural, and human environments; and contribute to a safe and healthful workplace.

Typical work assignments include: Development and implementation of an appropriate environmental management system (EMS) / environmental compliance management plan (CMP) of sufficient scope and content to ensure the unit (installation) is continually in compliance with all environmental requirements at the federal, state, regional / local and department / organizational levels Working in concert with higher graded environmental staff, the employee assists with the corrections of deficiencies for assigned program areas and activities that involve a wide range of environmental laws and regulations The employee supports and champions the installation's efforts to sustain and foster the intent and spirit of the Commandant's Sustainability, Environmental, and Energy Policy Statement (i.e.
Coast Guard (CG) environmental policy statement, current edition) and the installation's Environmental Policy Statement Participating in the training and education of personnel at all levels on regulation requirements, environmental protection matters, sustainability efforts, and environmental program goals and objectives.
Supports the development and delivery of formal / informal training programs and procedures; documents results.
