About the Unit:The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has two openings for an Engineer-In-Training I with our Region 5 Materials Team in Durango.

The Materials Team provides project development, construction management, and materials engineering and management for transportation projects in the Southwest, Gunnison, and San Luis Valley Transportation Planning Regions (TPR) and adjoining counties.

About the Position: Under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, this Engineer-In-Training I is expected to gain engineering expertise and to apply engineering theories, principles, and standards to project development, construction management, and materials engineering and management for transportation projects.

As the selected candidate gains knowledge and experience, there is opportunity for advancement.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Learn to apply current state and federal design specifications and standards to develop safe, economical, efficient transportation project designs.
  • Prepare engineering quality plans, specifications and estimates for roadway and pavement thickness calculations with the use of computer design programs.
  • Learn how to establish alignments, profiles, cross-sections, and/or pavement typical sections of proposed roadways and detours to create details for inclusion in Design Residency plans, and verify computer output data.
  • Compile all materials specifications required for projects in the Region.
  • Learn to request field surveys, right-of-way information, environmental assessments, traffic data and safety studies, hydrologic analysis, structural designs, and recommendations from other CDOT engineering specialty units.

    Evaluate information received from other units and, under the direction of a Project Manager, determine the best manner in which to incorporate recommendations into project designs.

  • Learn to compile collected (soil) survey data using design based computer programs.
  • Learn to develop cost estimates for budgeting and bidding of design projects and construction of roadway projects, especially the materials portions of a project in order to compare alternative materials selections.
  • Learn to use estimates and cost data to complete Pavement Justification Reports and Life Cycle Cost Analyses for project materials recommendations in accordance with the CDOT Pavement Design Manual.
  • Create tabulation sheets showing all construction bid items and quantities.
  • Learn to generate bid proposals ads and estimates for material quantities and planned work using Trans*port.
  • Participate in coordination meetings with various CDOT units and outside agencies such as Federal Highway Administration, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Army Corps of Engineers, and Division of Wildlife throughout the design process to produce a set of accurate plans within budget and on schedule.
  • Learn to develop region-wide surface treatment plans for project development for the Region program.
  • Learn pavement management which consists of evaluating the condition of pavements in the Region and maintaining the asset management system, dTIMS, quality control of system data, system match criteria and determination, running system outputs, and producing recommendations for the upcoming projected program for surface treatment.
  • Learn to perform detailed visual inspections as construction progresses to verify that contractors' construction methods, procedures, and final results conform to engineering details and specifications.
  • Learn to accurately record test results, pay quantities, project activities, conditions, design data and criteria.
  • Learn to complete various handwritten and computerized office and field reports.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment:
  • Your schedule will be Monday – Friday with opportunity for a flexible schedule as approved by the supervisor .
  • Extra and nighttime hours outside normal working hours sometimes required.
  • This position works fully in-office (no remote work).
  • Approximately 20% spent in the field, 80% spent in the office.
  • Regular travel required during work hours for project related activities, site visits, meetings and training.
  • Overnight travel throughout Colorado to projects and throughout the Region and for meetings, primarily 2-5 days 6-9 times annually.
  • Required to lift heavy objects up to 70 pounds.
  • Required to work outside in all weather conditions, in close proximity to moving traffic, and over variable terrain.
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or engineering technology. We will accept applications from May 2026 graduates.


Substitutions:

  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors; OR
  • Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors.

College Transcripts: If you are using education to qualify, a legible copy of your official or unofficial college transcript(s) or an official foreign credential evaluation report must be submitted with your application. Transcripts must show the name of the school, completed credit hours, and (if applicable) that a degree was conferred. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must have been assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. The credential evaluation report must be an official report. Failure to provide a transcript or official foreign credential evaluation report may result in your application being rejected and you will not be able to continue in the selection process for this position.

Conditions of Employment

  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training I must obtain enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors within three years of the initial appointment to the EIT I classification.
  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training must obtain registration as a Professional Engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors within eight years of the initial appointment to the EIT classification.
  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired for this position must pass the CDOT Inspector Qualification Series exams within six months of the initial appointment to the EIT I classification.
  • Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks. More information in the supplemental information section.
  • A current valid driver's license is required for this position as it requires operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
