About the Position

This position supports the delivery of highway construction projects within Region 2 by assisting with construction inspection and project administration activities.

Under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, the Engineer-in-Training II helps ensure projects meet contract requirements, plans, specifications, and applicable federal and state regulations.

The role participates in both pre-construction and construction phases, including assisting with plan and estimate reviews, materials testing, inspection, and documentation.

This position is assigned progressively responsible tasks requiring the application of standard engineering principles and professional judgment while supporting the State’s highway transportation system.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following
  • Perform field inspections to ensure construction activities comply with contract plans, specifications, and project requirements
  • Monitor, measure, and document quantities of installed materials for accuracy and payment verification
  • Review material test results, contractor submittals, and workmanship to ensure compliance with quality standards
  • Maintain daily project documentation, including diaries and construction activity records
  • Assist with project administration and coordination, including support for pay estimates, change orders, and contract documentation (e.g., Form 105s and Form 90s)
  • Maintain and organize official project records, including receiving, logging, distributing, and filing project documentation
  • Assist with the review of plans, specifications, and cost estimates at key design milestones and provide input on constructability and project requirements
  • Participate in meetings and collaborate with project engineers, contractors, consultants, and stakeholders to support project delivery
  • Safely operate state vehicles to travel to project sites and meetings
  • Participate in required training, obtain/maintain certifications, and develop an annual training plan to support professional development

Work Environment
  • Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, but we are flexible to meet your work/life balance needs while ensuring CDOT business needs are met.
  • Initially in office attendance is required, during probationary period, with potential to work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work.
  • Approximately 10% spent in the field, 90% spent in the office
  • Travel required during work hours throughout Region 2
  • Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
  • Exerts up to 50lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10lbs. of force regularly to move objects
  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.
  • Exposure to nonweather-related hot and cold temperatures.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:

Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.

Substitutions

Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors will substitute for the enrollment as an Engineer Intern.

  • A current valid driver’s license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.

  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired for Engineer-In-Training positions must also licensure as a professional engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors within eight years of initial appointment to an EIT position.

  • Experience with geotech software and "structural design software;
