Summary

This job involves leading the design, building, and testing of prototype systems that help submarines understand how ocean conditions affect their underwater operations, while managing teams and collaborating with experts.

It's ideal for an experienced engineer or scientist passionate about naval technology, ocean environments, and leading diverse groups to solve real-world military challenges.

The role requires strong technical knowledge in acoustics and submarine systems, plus skills in mentoring and communicating with military leaders.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-12/13 in engineering or science, focusing on acoustic technology, systems engineering, tactical oceanography, or submarine systems
  • Ability to lead interdisciplinary teams in developing and transitioning prototype systems for undersea warfare
  • Expertise in designing sensors and systems to measure and evaluate ocean environments for tactical awareness
  • Experience collaborating with naval technical experts, research centers, academia, and fleet commands

Full Job Description

You will serve as an ENGINEER OR SCIENTIST in the DEPUTY TECHNICAL DIRECTOR OFFICE (TDB) of NAVUNSEAWARCENDIV NEWPORT RI.

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower pay band, ND-4 (GS-12/13 equivalency) in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional engineer or scientist applying knowledge of acoustic technology, systems engineering, tactical oceanography, and submarine systems, to lead interdisciplinary teams to support Tactical Oceanography (TACO) prototype capabilities and integration Additional qualification information can be found from the following Office of Personnel Management website: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/general-schedule-qualification-standards/#url=List-by-Occupational-Series Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will serve as the Chief Engineer for Tactical Oceanography (TACO) Prototyping.
  • You will be responsible for the development and oversight of designing, building, and transitioning prototype systems that enable platforms to quantify the impact of the ocean environment on USW system performance.
  • You will be the lead for new sensors that measure, collect, and evaluate the environment for undersea tactical and operational situational awareness.
  • You will collaborate with NUWC Chief Engineers and NAVSEA Technical Warrant Holders to ensure that TACO prototyping efforts employ and leverage validated and authoritative system engineering practices.
  • You will work with the Director of TACO Research and Development Transition to ensure new prototype systems capture fleet feedback regarding effectiveness in support of decision making.
  • You will lead and mentor a diverse technical workforce in efforts to operationalize tactical oceanographic system concepts.
  • You will act as the NUWC lead for all TACO system prototype collaborations with university affiliated research centers, federally funded research and develop centers, academia, and other warfare centers
  • You will facilitate collaboration between technical workface and Fleet Commands by leveraging a variety of communication techniques to convey Tactical Oceanography concepts to submarine crews and submarine force leadership.
