Job Description

Summary

This job involves inspecting elevators and similar devices in buildings across Michigan to ensure they meet safety laws and standards, checking new installations, doing regular maintenance reviews, and addressing any issues or accidents.

Inspectors order fixes for problems and keep detailed records of their work.

It's a great fit for experienced elevator technicians who enjoy hands-on fieldwork, problem-solving, and ensuring public safety.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • Six years of experience in elevator construction, installation, repair, or maintenance
  • At least two years of experience at a journey-level in elevator skilled trades
  • Possession of an elevator journeyperson or elevator contractor's license from Michigan LARA
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to investigate accidents, complaints, and enforce compliance with laws and rules

Full Job Description


The Bureau of Construction Codes (BCC) is filling several full and part time Elevator Inspector E11 positions in various locations throughout Michigan.

This position is responsible for the inspection of new or altered elevating devices to determine compliance with applicable laws, rules, and standards; perform annual or periodic inspections on commercial elevating devices as determined by law or rules; order necessary corrections when violations are identified and follow-up to make sure corrections have been made; and maintain records and reports. In addition, the inspector may investigate elevator accidents and complaints and assist with prosecution of violations of the law or rules.

Requirements

Education

Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience

Six years of experience in the construction, installation, repair, or maintenance of elevators, including two years equivalent to a journey-level, elevator, skilled trades worker.

Additional Information

Possession of an elevator journeyperson or elevator contractor's license issued by the Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

Possession of a valid driver's license.
