Full Job Description

Performs Electronic Security System (ESS) support work that is moderately complex in nature. Provides first and second-level security system user support both on-site as well as through remote computer network access to applications. Assists with the implementation, evaluation and usage of new security technologies. Performs basic ESS administration and troubleshooting of communication problems as they affect security systems. Performs monitoring and troubleshooting of electronic security systems: access control, analog and IP video surveillance, and alarm systems.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics                                                                                        

This is a job classification within the Skilled Trades job family. This classification may require a flexible work schedule in order to meet the needs of the department and may occasionally be required to respond to emergency situations after hours or on weekends and holidays for the purpose of resolving immediate safety/security concerns. This position reports to the Security Division Manager.

Requirements

  • Receives, tracks, processes incoming work order requests providing first- and second-level technical assistance to users. Updates work order status to document work completion.
  • Inspects and performs preventative maintenance of electronic  security  systems. Makes recommendations regarding replacement of components.
  • Monitors and inspects work performed by third party contractors in the repair or installation of security systems or components.
  • Creates and maintains security project documentation including “as built” drawings, vendor supplied technical and user documentation, system inventories, contracts, etc.
  • Gathers internal customer business requirements; works with security system design and engineering resources to translate into actionable technical requirements for third party contractors.
  • Works on special projects providing technical assistance to users and other support employees.
  • Prepares purchase requests for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items.
  • Performs all identity administration duties to include issuing cards and managing access control rights for personnel throughout the County as well as other services to maintain compliance with Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) requirements.
  • Attend training and certification courses as needed and as required by the Department, in order to maintain certifications and skills necessary to perform the job.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent AND Five (5) years’ experience in the field including installation, testing, and operation of electronic security systems;

OR,

Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:

Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Must pass a criminal background check for CJIS clearance.

Preferred:

Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering Technology.

Working knowledge of Genetec Security Center Software Systems.

Spanish Speaking Preferred.

Knowledge of:

  • Policies, practices, procedures and terminology of assigned function.
  • Basic structured cabling concepts and principles such as bend radius, connection point quality, cable type, etc. NEC cable listings and conduit standards and NEC 300-21.
  • Security technology hardware, software, and components as related to assigned function.
  • Network operating systems, desktop operating systems, user applications and system integration.
  • Computer equipment to include word processing, spreadsheets, databases and a variety of software packages.

Skill in:

  • Identifying opportunities for improved system function or value.
  • Navigating directories, managing files, configuring hardware, and installing firmware updates.
  • Identifying the possible sources of a given problem, determining which components might be involved, and how interconnected components may be tested independently.
  • Both verbal and written communication in the English language, including presentations and communicating technical issues in nontechnical language.
  • Calculating estimates of time, labor and quantities of materials needed.
  • Use of proper test equipment and hand tools related to various electronic security systems.
  • Identifying opportunities for improved system function or value.
  • Navigating directories, managing files, configuring hardware, and installing firmware updates.

Ability to:

  • Work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
  • Climb ladders and work in high and low locations to reach remote areas. Permanently apply the appropriate labels to cables, using numeric or alphabetic wraparound labels, or attachable open comment tags.
  • Perform basic to intermediate software and hardware diagnostics and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrate strong customer services skills.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Manage time well, perform multiple tasks and organize diverse activities.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental clientele, outside agencies and providers, other County employees and officials, and the general public.

Additional Information

Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 35-40 pounds occasionally, visual acuity, good color perception, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and test equipment.

Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, crawling, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, twisting, balancing, repetitive motion, and squatting to perform the essential functions.

Subject to exposure to variations in extreme heat, cold, mechanical, fume/odor, and dust/mites.


Travis County employees play an important role in business continuity. As such, employees can be assigned to business continuity efforts outside of normal job functions.
