The Pasadena Water and Power Department is seeking motivated and reliable individuals to join its Transmission and Distribution Division as Electrical Craft Helpers.

In this role, you will support apprentice- and journey-level electrical workers with the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission and distribution systems, including substations and switch racks.

The position also involves performing semi-skilled, physically demanding tasks related to utility operations.

This is an entry-level opportunity for individuals interested in starting a career in the electric utility industry with Pasadena Water and Power.

Requirements

The major responsibilities of this position are listed below. For more information, please review the job description.

  • Drives various types of trucks, both light and heavy duty, to and from job sites. In the absence of regular equipment, operators may drive and/or operate specialized equipment, including various jackhammers, chipping guns, coring machines and drills used by electrical construction crews.
  • Places warning devices and other safety apparatus, (i.e. traffic cones, barricades, highway flashers) while working in the streets.
  • Assists electrical construction personnel by maintaining all tools and work-related materials ready for use, such as rubber protective equipment, mechanical jumpers, ladders, ropes, slings, hand tools, power tools.
  • Assembles overhead and underground apparatus used in the everyday performance or duties.
  • Works in confined spaces and in close proximity of all types of energized underground cables and switchgear and other related equipment; locates underground utilities.
  • Assists crews in the installation and removal of wires, cables, and transformers in the transmission and distribution system, and in the operation of various types of cable pulling and equipment setting vehicles.
  • Installs and repairs various types of underground conduits, pole risers, sump pumps, and vents.
  • Work on or in proximity to conductors, devices and equipment located in high-voltage stations, or switchyards. Raises, lowers and cleans manholes and vault covers to street grades, and cleans work areas.
  • Performs routine concrete and asphalt work.
  • Replaces tools and materials after work is completed.
  • Stocks and maintains inventory of materials and supplies on trucks; records, orders, and credits materials used for jobs as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • At least (1) one college/trade school class in electrical theory or practice OR
  • (1) One year of full-time experience assisting journey-level electrical craftsmen in the construction or utility industry.

SELECTION PROCESS

Selection is based on review of applications and supplemental applications submitted.

Applicants may also be required to complete a brief soft-skills assessment during the selection process.

VACANCY INFORMATION

There are currently (4) four vacancies in the Power Delivery- Transmission and Distribution division of the Pasadena Water and Power Department.

The eligibility list created from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies over the next twelve months.

The probationary period for this position is one year. This position is represented by IBEW Local 18.

Additional Information

Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License is required by the sixth month after appointment and as a condition of continued employment.

Per DMV regulations, Air Brake Driver's License Endorsement is required, and must be obtained within 60 days of appointment, and as a condition of employment.

Valid Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is required as a condition of employment and must be renewed every (2) years or as needed, per OSHA requirements.

Candidate(s) for this classification must be at least 18 years of age.

An Electrical Craft Helper is subject to emergency callouts 24 hours a day and therefore must have an active telephone line.
