The Department of Revenue, Tax Division is recruiting for an Economist 1/2/3. The position may be in Anchorage or Juneau depending upon the location of the most qualified candidate.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Revenue Forecasting and Model Development – You will help develop and implement economic and revenue models to produce the state’s official revenue forecast.
  • Macroeconomic Modeling and Analysis – You will use specialized software (REMI or similar) to model economic impacts of policy and projects.
  • Conduct Research and Analysis – You will prepare white papers, presentations, spreadsheets, and other materials on a broad range of topics.
  • Legislation – You will develop or assist with preparing fiscal impact estimates for proposed legislation.
  • This position is primarily – but not exclusively – focused on non-petroleum revenue sources.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This position is being recruited as a dual location recruitment and can be located in either the State Office Building in Juneau, or the Atwood Building in Anchorage.

In person work is completed in a professional office environment, and while fully remote work is not an option, a hybrid telework schedule may be an option once initial training is complete.

Economist 1 Minimum Qualifications (Range 16)

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in

  • Decision Making: Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.
  • Economics: Knowledge of economic policy, principles, and practices, market and non-market values, and the analysis and reporting of economic data.
  • Research: Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.
Equivalent to those typically gained by:
Completion of a postsecondary education program with a major emphasis in a discipline of economics.

Economist 2 Minimum Qualifications (Range 18)

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in

  • Decision Making: Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.
  • Economics: Knowledge of economic policy, principles, and practices, market and non-market values, and the analysis and reporting of economic data.
  • Oral Communication: Makes clear and convincing oral presentations. Listens effectively; clarifies information as needed.
  • Research: Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.
  • Written Communication: Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience.
Equivalent to those typically gained by:
Completion of a postsecondary education program with a major emphasis in a discipline of economics.
And
Entry professional experience in the collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of economic, social science, or similar data.
Special Note:
"Professional experience" means work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the power or right to decide or act according to one's own judgment.

Economist 3 Minimum Qualifications (Range 20)

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in

  • Creativity and Innovation: Develops new insights into situations; questions conventional approaches; encourages new ideas and innovations; designs and implements new or cutting-edge programs/processes.
  • Economics and Accounting: Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, tax law and practices, the financial markets, banking, and the analysis and reporting of financial data.
  • Influencing/Negotiating: Persuades others; builds consensus through give and take; gains cooperation from others to obtain information and accomplish goals.
  • Research: Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.
  • Technical Credibility: Understands and appropriately applies principles, procedures, requirements, regulations, and policies related to specialized expertise.
Equivalent to those typically gained by:
Completion of a postsecondary education program with a major emphasis in a discipline of economics.
And
Progressively responsible professional experience in the collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of economic, social science, or similar data.
