Job Description

Summary

This job involves supporting early childhood education programs in South Carolina by monitoring literacy initiatives, providing training to teachers, and analyzing data to improve reading skills in young children.

Full Job Description

PURPOSE

To provide support for early learning and literacy, specifically, the Child Early Reading Development Education Program (CERDEP) monitoring and evaluation, data, and research.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Early Learning Specialist will play a key role in advancing early childhood education initiatives statewide. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in emergent literacy, professional development, and data analysis, with a proven ability to lead and foster a positive, productive work environment at the school or district level. Early Learning Specialists will coordinate and support the implementation of CERDEP programs and deliver professional development for state-wide, regional, and school-based audiences on the science of reading. Moreover, the Early Learning Specialist will model research-based teaching practices, incorporate adult learning theory, and drive continuous improvement through data collection and analysis. South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) Early Learning Specialists will travel to CERDEP schools four days per week.

This position is located in the Office of Instructional Supports.

Requirements

A bachelor's degree and experience in education, management or business.

Qualifications

SCDE Early Learning Specialists must hold the following credentials:

  • Master’s degree in education with three (3) years of documented successful experience teaching literacy, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in education with five (5) years of documented successful experience teaching literacy with a minimum of three (3) years of at the State, District or School Level;
  • Valid South Carolina Educator Professional License;
  • Successful experience facilitating adult learning and delivering professional development specific to literacy instruction;
  • Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) or EC LETRS training preferable;
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, and providing feedback about instruction to classroom teachers;
  • Experience leading others in a collaborative process;
  • Experience analyzing and using student achievement data for instructional purposes;
  • Experience in school and district curriculum, and assessment;
  • Ability to travel on a daily basis.

JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of Act 114, CERDEP, and DSS Guidelines;
  • Knowledge of PreK state assessments and curriculums,
  • Knowledge of science of reading pedagogy as it relates to emergent literacy;
  • Ability to create and facilitate professional development;
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and apply data;
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders at the school, district, and state levels.
