  • Two or more years of experience in laboratory testing and specimen processing in a clinical, academic, or research setting, OR completion of an ASCP-approved laboratory assistant course, OR an associate's degree from a CAHEA-accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program with chemistry and biology courses
  • Experience performing venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures
  • Ability to operate, maintain, and clean laboratory equipment
  • Strong attention to detail for reviewing results, data entry, and quality control
  • Knowledge of lab protocols for processing, labeling, and tracking specimens

Full Job Description

Laboratory Technician 2 - Phlebotomy

At Western State Hospital, we rely on timely, accurate laboratory results to help medical teams understand what is happening with each patient and guide treatment decisions.

As a Laboratory Technician 2, your work will support safe, informed care for individuals receiving inpatient mental health and psychiatric services.

In this role, you will perform a variety of laboratory tests, review results and document findings with accuracy.

You will also collect and process patient specimens, including performing phlebotomy when needed.

Careful attention to detail is essential, as the results you produce help clinical staff make informed decisions for patients receiving inpatient mental health and psychiatric services.

This role is well suited for someone who enjoys hands-on laboratory work, working with testing equipment and keeping information organized and correct. Your work behind the scenes plays an important role in the care patients receive every day.

Opportunities performed on-site at this work location at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary. Pierce County employees are eligible to receive an Orca Card for transportation needs.

Some of what you will do

  • Perform venipuncture and other procedures to collect specimens from patients.
  • Process, label, and track specimens in accordance with lab protocols.
  • Conduct a wide variety of clinical laboratory tests and enter results into the correct systems.
  • Review and verify testing results before release.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Restock reagents and monitor supply inventory.
  • Report critical or abnormal results to appropriate clinical staff.
  • Perform quality control procedures, including reagent checks and validation testing.
  • Participate in required trainings and ensure current lab procedures reflect active practice.

Who should apply?

Those with a current Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy certificate and at least six months of phlebotomy experience.


AND one of the following:

Two or more years of experience performing laboratory testing and specimen processing in either a clinical, academic or research laboratory setting.ORCompletion of a course for laboratory assistants, approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

ORAn associate's degree from a Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program including courses in chemistry and biology.


Additional knowledge, skills and abilities we are looking for:
  • Laboratory testing skills: Experience performing laboratory tests in a clinical or research laboratory while following established procedures.
  • Attention to detail: Carefully review specimens, testing steps and documentation to ensure results are accurate.
  • Data entry accuracy: Record laboratory results and specimen information correctly in laboratory systems.
  • Organization: Manage multiple specimens and testing tasks while maintaining orderly laboratory workflows.
  • Quality awareness: Support quality control procedures and follow laboratory standards.
