Requirements

The Work Unit:

The Aurora Emissions Technical Center and High Altitude Lab (AEL) provides crucial technical assistance to the Mobile Sources Section of the Air Pollution Control Division.

This unit plays a significant role in maintaining air quality by providing field support and technical assistance to the general public, affected businesses, and the Dept of Revenue for Colorado Air Quality Commission Regulations on gasoline and diesel motor vehicle inspection programs, alternative fuels, retrofit programs, and oxygenated fuels.

The unit's high-altitude mass emission testing of motor vehicles is instrumental in collecting in-use vehicle emissions data for air quality modeling, the development and evaluation of mobile source emissions reduction strategies, and, in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency, the assessment of motor vehicle compliance with high-altitude emissions standards for recall purposes.

What you will be doing

AEL staff provide direct public assistance for technical support related to emissions failures and provide repair industry expertise for laboratory activities.This position will perform vehicle mass emissions tests with production and laboratory-grade equipment and processes, including non-dispersive infrared, chemiluminescence, flame ionization, and gas chromatography analytical systems.

They will review the resulting test data to identify and resolve automobile malfunctions.

The position is also responsible for operating, calibrating, and troubleshooting specialized electronic and electromechanical equipment to meet unique test requirements.

In doing so, they will establish and write procedures for operating the equipment effectively.Job Duties:

Inspect, Diagnose, Document Vehicle Emissions Failures for Motorists
During technical evaluations, staff will diagnose and document conditions causing emissions failures. They will verify the nature of emissions failures on various vehicles, identify the root cause of one or more failures, and document a suggested corrective action.

Support technical evaluation and study vehicle intake.
This position answers questions from the repair industry and the general public about the Colorado emissions program. Tasks include both phone calls and walk-in contacts at the Aurora facility.

Inspect, Diagnose, Document, and Repair Study Vehicles
The position will inspect incoming research vehicles and determine acceptability for inclusion into research projects. They prepare vehicles for testing in accordance with the study protocol's guidance and requirements. The position analyzes and identifies root cause(s) of malfunctions that lead to elevated emissions in research vehicles. The position repairs and adjusts vehicles to manufacturer standards. The position maintains various datasets, including emissions test records and vehicle on-board scan data. They keep detailed notes on project vehicles and provide information and reports on research processes, repair procedures, and the final disposition of vehicles.

Participate in outreach and training.
The position coordinates with CDPHE campus staff and other tech centers to develop bulletins and updates for inspection stations and fleets. They assist in the planning, development and presentation of training seminars, including ""Tech Nights."" They present new repair concepts/theories that help test diagnose and bring into regulatory compliance, complex emissions failures. The position provides training and outreach activities for the public on vehicle inspection, diagnosis and repair procedures. Contribute to Mobile Sources brochures, newsletters and bulletins.

Investigate Motorists Complaints
Assist with the resolution of complaints filed by customers concerning AQCC Regulation 11, 12, and 20 requirements. Investigate and identify complaints filed against inspection stations by the customers, for subsequent enforcement action by Department of Revenue staff.

Other Duties as Assigned

Attends meetings, serves on task forces or teams, completes projects, and performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
The position maintains a clean work area and returns tools to secure storage at the end of the day.
The position has building opening and closing responsibilities.


Qualifications

Residency Requirement:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

An applicant may meet the minimum qualifications for this job in one of two ways: They may qualify through their work experience alone or through a combination of education and work experience.

Experience Only:

Six (6) years of relevant experience in a dealership or independent repair facility performing job duties as a drivability technician.


OR

Education and Experience:

A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in automotive diagnosis and repair equal to six (6) years


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

In addition to the minimum requirements, the successful candidate in this position will have the following experience:

  • Previous State Service related to the work assigned to the position (REQUIRED)
  • ASE Master Certification (A1-A8)
  • ASE L1 Certification
  • Bilingual English/Spanish

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • A pre-employment background check will be conducted as part of the selection process.
  • TRAVEL: 1-2 Times per month for training and team meetings at other tech centers, Campus events
  • SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Valid Colorado Driver’s License
