Job Description
- Transfer, receive, process, and store evidence from law enforcement personnel across the state and the DCI Criminalistics Laboratory; Review case submission information for completeness and accuracy, Label and store evidence within the evidence room using the appropriate databases and equipment.
- Coordinate purging and destruction of evidence in accordance with property evidence destruction procedures.
- Maintain required evidentiary databases; Conduct and/or assist in mandatory evidentiary audits pursuant to evidence property control procedures.
- Provide DPS personnel with assistance and information regarding property/evidence submissions.
- Coordinate the procurement of evidentiary related supplies for evidence room processing and storage, as needed. Coordinate the procurement associated with the maintenance of evidence equipment.
- Testify in court proceedings when requested.

Essential Functions
- Performs technical processing work in the receipt, preservation, storage, transfer, transport, and disposal of evidence submitted for analysis or held for criminal action; Performs related work as required.
- Operate and maintain facility equipment in a safe and efficient manner while maintaining the integrity, chain of custody, and security of evidence by adhering to policies and procedures.
- Testifies in criminal court proceedings regarding the chain of custody of evidence and property/evidence functions.
- Ensures evidence is properly packaged for receipt or transfer; Ensure proper evidentiary packaging and processing policies are maintained.
- Keeps DPS personnel apprised of the time frames required for examination, retention, or destruction of evidence and responds to requests from law enforcement and/or judicial proceedings regarding status of evidence.
- Prepares evidence or other material for disposal and conducts periodic evidence destruction following department procedures, when authorized.
- Adhere to Prop 19 - Property and Evidence Reference Manual.
- Perform heavy manual tasks and lift a minimum of 50 lbs in the performance of duties.

Additional Requirements
Possess and maintain a fork lift/people lift operator certification.
Possess and maintain a valid Iowa Driver's License.
The State of Iowa is an E-Verify Employer.

Qualifications

An associate of arts degree;
OR
graduation from high school or G.E.D. and experience equal to two years of full-time work in record keeping, data entry, inventory management or bookkeeping;
OR
graduation from high school or G.E.D. and experience equal to 18 months of full-time work in a law enforcement property room as an evidence technician.
