This position is open to current Colorado residents only.

The Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Fort Logan (CMHHiFL) is one of two state hospitals serving our community. The vision of CMHHiFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to persons with complex, serious, and persistent mental illness within the resources available. Our mission is to support those individuals in achieving their recovery goals and reaching their full potential. CMHHiFL provides inpatient treatment to adult patients, generally between the ages of 18-59. The hospital currently has 160 adult inpatient beds, over seven treatment milieus serving civil and forensic individuals. Medical services, occupational therapy, neuropsychological-rehabilitation services, and trauma-informed care services are available for all patients throughout the hospital.

The Social Work Department consists of social workers, transition specialists, addiction specialists, and administrative support functioning full-time within the 24-hour State psychiatric hospital. The work unit collaborates with patients, their families and/or support systems, and external stakeholders to plan, organize, and execute psychiatric treatment interventions and comprehensive aftercare plans with placement. Services include clinical assessment, treatment planning, individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, counseling, and education. This work unit serves as a liaison among the hospital, community partners, and other governmental entities. This position functions as the work unit Director within the psychiatric hospital

The Director of Social Work exists to provide leadership and oversight to the Social Work Department, which includes the social work team and the centralized services for substance abuse education and benefits acquisition. The Director of Social Work informs management decisions through specialized knowledge and experience within the social work profession and contributes to the planning, developing, and implementation of program operations. In collaboration with the Chief Clinical Officer, this position oversees and ensures the effectiveness of the services provided by the social work team through program evaluation, development, and implementation. The Director is required to have good working knowledge of multi discipline licensing and certification requirements (social work and addiction specialists), as well as ethical and practice specific guidelines. The Director is responsible for the employee supervisory responsibilities of this work unit. In addition, this position develops and contributes to the provision of training and educational materials for the work unit and for hospital-wide in-services to staff and patients. Lastly, this position provides discipline-specific services to our patients across the hospital on an as-needed basis and serves as a hospital consultant specific to the respective area of expertise. Other duties include:

Work Unit Management:
The Director of Social Work provides leadership and direction to the daily operations of the work unit, consisting of various levels of social work staff, substance abuse specialists, and the Transitions Team. In collaboration with the Chief Clinical Officer, this position assesses the needs for the work unit based on program evaluation, patient treatment needs, strategic planning, the overall hospital mission, and resource allocation. Similarly, ensuring effective services are being provided by developing, implementing, and monitoring all work unit responsibilities.

Supports consistent implementation and compliance with related treatment standards and external agency rules/regulations (e.g.

The Joint Commission (TJC) and Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services CMS), reports any deficits to leadership, and collaborates in developing operational procedures to ensure patient care.

  • Serves as an advocate for the work unit and communicates needs and plans to leadership, which includes identifying and proposing solutions to discharge barriers, benefit acquisition processes, and patient population-specific treatment.
  • Engages with relevant stakeholders regarding such patterns to collaboratively problem-solve. This position must have good working knowledge of the various clinical disciplines regulatory and licensure/certification requirements and practices to ensure they are upheld.
  • Developing, implementing, and monitoring patient assessments, treatment planning, group sessions, case management and disposition services, coordination of care with support system engagement, and individual interventions.

    Should there be the need for quality improvement, the Director is responsible for identifying those needs and developing a corrective plan of action to present to leadership.

  • Creates work unit protocols and audit tools.
  • Makes efforts to develop and maintain student training opportunities when possible, which requires familiarity with discipline specific educational requirements and relationships with educational institutions.
  • This position leads all interviewing, hiring, and training of employees, and organizing and leading department meetings.
  • Possesses specialized knowledge within the discipline and regularly participates in hospital committees and work groups. As the Director of this work unit, this position is responsible for all work unit related needs during business hours and after hours as needed.
  • With regard to the work unit budget, this position monitors all department-related expenditures and individual clinicians’ budgets by approving P-card purchases and overseeing annual operating funds assigned to the work unit.
  • Clinical Supervision and Personnel:

    Responsible for employee supervisory responsibilities for the work unit.

    This includes provision of clinical and administrative supervision, professional development, employee performance evaluations, employee performance plans, corrective and disciplinary actions, staff scheduling, position descriptions, recruitment, retention, interviewing and hiring, onboarding and training all staff, and ensuring hospital-wide required training has been completed.

  • In collaboration with direct supervisors, this position identifies if/when staff may be eligible for a promotion or require a transfer and presents that information to leadership.
  • Ensures student training opportunities are available and the associated supervision is provided as required by the Hospital, educational institution, and respective discipline.
  • Responsible for developing work unit competencies and continuing education as needed for the work unit.
  • Currently, direct supervision includes four (4) unit social work supervisors, each responsible for their own direct reports.

    This position also directly supervises the Program Assistant II assigned to Social Work and Therapeutic Activities. Currently, there are a total of 24 Full-Time Employees (FTE) within the work unit.

    The Director is responsible for first-line supervision of four (4) work unit employees and 20 second-line work unit employees.

  • Serves as the appointing authority for performance actions and decisions that directly impact pay, status, and tenure of employees.
  • Stakeholder Communication and Liaison:

    Leads the implementation of initiatives to engage and educate community members about the CMHHIFL, our patient population, and systemic needs and barriers.

    Stakeholders may include, but are not limited to, the Office of Civil and Forensic Mental Health, Regional Accountable Entities (RAE), Community Boards, Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF), Social Security Administration, the community safety net partners, and other agencies geared towards addressing and planning for patient needs.

  • Leads initiatives to identify, communicate, and collaborate with stakeholders regarding patient care needs and support transition from the hospital into the community.
  • In addition, the Director leads the implementation of initiatives to establish and create meaningful educational training opportunities with numerous educational institutions.
  • Clinical Services and Hospital Consultation:

    Clinical services may include application of discipline-specific theories, frameworks, and/or models of practice, which are applied during assessments, as well as group and individual treatment planning and intervention.

    All service provision requires detailed documentation within an electronic health record.

  • Engages in discipline-specific assessments, treatment planning, and collaboration in disposition planning. Interventions are created, reviewed, modified, or discontinued as needed by the individual in care.
  • Consults hospital-wide as needed and as referred by the various treatment teams to inform individualized treatment needs.
  • As Director of one of the hospital work units with licensed clinicians, this position is required to remain informed of all statutes, policies, and procedures related to abuse and neglect screening and reporting.

    The Director supports all licensed staff in adhering to those requirements and collaborates with leadership and other departments to ensure

  • Develops and delivers hospital-wide in-service training regarding the work unit, as well as areas of specialization.
  • Help facilitate and participate in community outings (requiring a valid Colorado driver’s license), hospital-wide activities, and training in hospital-approved crisis management techniques.
  • Other Duties As Assigned:
    • Other duties as assigned include, but are not limited to, hospital-wide ad hoc activities, committee and project involvement , patient transport assistance, etc.

    Qualifications

    Experience Only:

    Nine (9) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position

    OR

    Education and Experience:

    A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned is equal to nine (9) years.


    SPECIAL QUALIFICATION: Must be a licensed LCSW

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory/management experience
    • Must have a Master’s Degree in Social Work
    • Experience working with psychiatric inpatient settings, SPMI, and/or forensic populations

    • Experience in program development, evaluation, and quality improvement

    • Knowledge of behavioral health regulations and accreditation standards

    • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and coordinating external partnerships

    • Previous State Experience
