This entry-level dietitian role in a VA clinic in Victoria, Texas, focuses on providing personalized nutrition advice to veterans with complex health issues through home-based primary care, working closely with doctors, families, and community groups to set health goals and improve meal services.

Provides autonomous, evidence-based medical nutrition therapy in Home-Based Primary Care for Veterans with complex medical and nutritional needs, serving as the clinical nutrition expert.
Coordinates care with the interdisciplinary team, Veterans, caregivers, and community partners; applies research to establish patient-centered goals and improve outcomes; and collaborates with Food Operations to enhance dining services, patient satisfaction, and overall quality of care.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) - Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
Exception for GS-07 and GS-09 Only: Dietitians who do not possess the RDN/RD credential.
Non-credentialed Dietitians who otherwise meet the basic qualification requirements and have fulfilled the requirements below, but do not possess the RDN credential, may be given a full-time temporary appointment not to exceed one year under the authority of 38 U.S.C.
7405(c)(2). May only be appointed at the GS-07 or GS-09 level and may not be promoted/converted until they obtain their RDN credential.
Non-credentialed Dietitians must have fulfilled each of the following: Earned a bachelor's or higher degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent.
Foreign Education: To be creditable, college and/or university degrees earned outside the U.S and its territories must be evaluated by ACEND and meet ACEND's International Dietitian Education standards which are designed to provide graduates with the knowledge and competencies to sit for the CDR credentialing exam.
~AND~ Completed an ACEND accredited experiential or supervised practice program and provide a verification statement from the program director that conveys eligibility to take the CDR registration exam as a prospective RDN.

Current VHA Dietitians that qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision may not be promoted to a higher grade if they do not meet the current RDN/RD requirements.

Clinical Dietitians conduct nutrition assessments for patients with lower acuity using the NCP while developing skills to apply evidence-based nutrition practice guidelines.
Clinical Dietitians learn to interpret research, apply whole health principles and develop patient-centered goals.
They develop skills in accurate record keeping of clinical activities and complete patient encounters using approved systems.
Clinical Dietitians comply with The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements and other accrediting agency standards to ensure safe and quality patient care.

GS-7 Duties Conduct nutrition assessments for lower-acuity patients using the Nutrition Care Process, including NFPE.
Develop, implement, monitor, and adjust Medical Nutrition Therapy using established guidelines. Calculate nutrient requirements and diet restrictions.
Identify patients needing nutrition support and communicate with the care team. Document care using ADIME and complete care plans/MOS within timelines.
Provide nutrition education and counseling to individuals and groups. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings. Maintain productivity standards and accurate records.
Manage clinic schedules to support access to care using established processes. Participate in service initiatives and performance improvement activities.
Comply with accreditation and regulatory standards. Perform other related duties as assigned.
GS-9 Duties Perform nutrition assessments for lower to moderate acuity patients with increased independence. Independently develop, implement, and modify Medical Nutrition Therapy and monitor outcomes.
Calculate and interpret nutrient needs across varied conditions. Recommend appropriate nutrition support modalities and coordinate with the care team.
Document care independently using ADIME and complete required plans within timeframes. Provide individualized and group counseling tailored to patient needs.
Actively contribute to interdisciplinary care planning. Manage clinic grids and modalities (virtual and in-person) to maximize access.
Participate in strategic planning, policy implementation, and performance improvement activities. Maintain productivity, records, and regulatory compliance. Perform other related duties as assigned.
GS-11 Duties Provide autonomous nutrition care for complex and high-risk patients, serving as the clinical nutrition expert.
Lead development, implementation, and evaluation of advanced Medical Nutrition Therapy interventions. Perform complex nutrient analysis and clinical decision-making for specialized conditions.
Coordinate nutrition care across interdisciplinary teams, caregivers, and community resources. Deliver advanced counseling and behavior-change interventions.
Function independently in documentation and clinical decision-making. Lead or drive quality improvement initiatives and use data to implement corrective actions.
Collaborate with operational units to improve patient experience and program outcomes. Influence care planning and program development at the service level or higher.
Maintain productivity, compliance, and accreditation standards. Perform other related duties as assigned.
