Job Description

Summary

This job involves working in a military hospital to help manage patients' meals by getting diet orders, checking food needs, and assisting dietitians with nutrition plans.

It's a support role focused on ensuring patients get the right foods based on their health conditions, allergies, and preferences.

A good fit would be someone organized and detail-oriented with basic knowledge of nutrition, possibly from school or hands-on experience in food service or healthcare.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience in monitoring nutrition care, obtaining diet orders, or assisting with nutrition plans (or equivalent at GS-04 level)
  • OR a bachelor's degree with a major in dietetics or nutrition, or at least 24 semester hours in related subjects
  • OR a combination of education and experience that meets the 100% qualification threshold
  • Knowledge of food nutrition components like calories, carbs, proteins, fats, fiber, sodium, and potassium
  • Strong verbal communication and interviewing skills for interacting with patients and staff

About the Position: This position is located in Fort Riley , Kansas. The location for this position is Irwin Army Community Hospital.

Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service. Non-Federal work experience may be creditable for leave purposes.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes monitoring nutrition care for all patients by obtaining diet orders from medical staff or health systems; or assisting with the implementation or evaluation of nutrition care plans to provide nutrition support to patients.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR Education: Four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as, dietetics or nutrition.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages. Major Duties:

  • Obtain diet orders before each meal service from ward nursing staff from faxed diet rosters.
  • Order non-prescription nourishment for patients while maintaining nutritional requirements and limitations of specific diets.
  • Utilize knowledge of calorie values, carbohydrate, protein, fat, fiber, sodium, potassium, and other nutrition components of foods.
  • Assist the dietitian in assessment of nutrition status, nutrition monitoring and screening of individual patient's needs.
  • Monitor patient's food tolerances, preferences, allergies, and/or special needs.
  • Provide professional, courteous verbal communication and interviewing skills.
  • Check diet roster prior to each meal; make necessary diet changes.
  • Periodically order 'mock' trays for quality assurance purposes.
