Job Description

Summary

This job is a trainee position where you'll learn to fix and maintain diesel-powered trucks, cars, and heavy construction equipment like loaders and mixers under the guidance of experienced mechanics.

You'll get hands-on training in diagnosing problems, performing repairs, and preventive maintenance to build skills for a long-term career in vehicle servicing.

It's a good fit for someone with basic automotive experience or technical school training who wants a stable government job and is willing to earn required licenses.

Key Requirements

  • Two years as a Tradesman Helper in the automotive field, or graduation from a post-high school diesel technology program, or equivalent experience and training
  • Active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's Learner's Permit or license on the first day of employment
  • Active Pennsylvania Class B Commercial Driver's License without Air Brake Restriction (L) or Manual Transmission (E) restrictions
  • Active Medical Examiner’s Certificate per Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day
  • Obtain Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during probationary period
  • Pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during probationary period
  • Possess active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N)

As a Diesel Trainee, you will work under the guidance of experienced supervisors, managers, and skilled staff while participating in a structured, hands-on training program. Throughout this program, you will learn and apply the full range of diagnostic, preventive maintenance, and repair skills needed to service construction equipment, trucks, and automobiles powered by gasoline and diesel engines. Requirements

In this role, you will assist in repairing and overhauling cars, trucks, and heavy equipment while learning to maintain and service machinery such as sweepers, mixers, and front-end loaders. You will help identify needed repairs and support the replacement of components including shock absorbers, transmissions, hour meters, clutches, brakes, and other parts. You will also assist with wheel balancing and alignment checks, perform minor body repairs, and test, repair, or replace alternators and other electrical components. In addition, you will take part in preventive maintenance operations on vehicles and equipment, gaining hands-on experience across a wide range of mechanical systems.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employments within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employments at the starting annual salary of $47,844.00 (before taxes).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field; or
  • Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.


Special Requirements:

  • This position requires employees to possess an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit or license on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to possess an active Pennsylvania Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission (E) removed, or equivalent.
  • This position requires employees to possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
  • This position will require employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
  • This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N).
