The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is looking for a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee to support the Philadelphia County Maintenance Organization. This role offers a structured, hands-on training program under the mentorship of experienced supervisors and staff, allowing you to develop skills in analytical tasks, preventative maintenance, and repairs for various construction equipment, trucks, and vehicles powered by gasoline or diesel engines. Requirements

In this position, you will engage in the repair and maintenance of cars, trucks, and various heavy equipment.

Your responsibilities will include learning to service equipment like sweepers, mixers, and front-end loaders, identifying necessary repairs, and assisting in the replacement of components such as shock absorbers, transmissions, and brakes.

You will also help with wheel balancing and alignment, perform minor body repairs, and test or replace alternators and electrical parts.

Preventative maintenance will be a key aspect of your role, along with conducting automotive diagnostics, tune-ups, and tire changes.

Additionally, you will be involved in repairing and adjusting systems related to cooling, suspension, electrical, heating, and air conditioning, as well as maintaining fuel injection, brake, steering, and transmission systems.

When required, you will participate in official state inspections for safety and emissions, ensuring that vehicles meet compliance standards, performing necessary repairs, conducting road tests, and completing inspection documentation.


Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours vary from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM, and 12:00 AM to 8:00 AM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Work hours are subject to change during the summer and winter seasons. Shift work, overtime, and travel are required.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years as a Tradesman Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) working in the automotive field; or
  • Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.


Special Requirements:

  • This position requires employees to possess an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed on the first day of employment.
  • Certain positions will require employees to possess an active Pennsylvania Class B Commercial Driver's License with Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
  • This position requires employees to possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • All positions will require employees to obtain a valid Pennsylvania Class 1, 4, or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
  • This position will require employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
