This position exists to ensure (by reviewing plans, processing documents, inspecting new construction projects, and completing ongoing inspections) that regulated facilities are constructed and maintained in accordance with requirements in statutes, rules, and adopted codes.
This position will conduct construction site inspections of facilities for code conformance; perform site inspections of building systems; perform construction inspections in facilities regulated by the DFPC; provide technical assistance to local governments on matters related to building, fire, and life safety protection; answer inquires related to building, fire, and life safety protection and interpretation of codes related to inspections performed.
This position is an entry-level position and is expected to attend trainings (sometimes requiring out of state travel for up to a week) and attain certifications to meet Building Inspector III qualifications within twenty-four (24) months of hire date.These certifications include ICC Commercial Building Plans Examiner, Commercial Mechanical Inspector or Commercial Mechanical Plans Examiner and ICC or NFPA Fire Inspector II.
Once all of these requirements have been met and the incumbent has demonstrated comprehension and application of DFPC policies and procedures, the position will be eligible for reallocation to Inspector III.
In addition, this position is expected to complete a Basic Life Safety Code class through the Centers for Mendicare and Medicaid Services (CMS); however, attendance in this class is not required prior to promoting to Building Inspector III.
Key Responsibilities: Perform Construction and Code Maintenance InspectionsConducts independent, document based and/or on-site, inspections of regulated facilities using state and federal regulations.
Writes clear, concise, and legally defensible statements of deficiencies based on analysis of the documented findings and extensive knowledge of regulation sets, guidelines, Principles of Documentation, and program specific protocols, policies and procedures.
Document and communicate construction and code discrepancies to facility personnel and design professionals and follow up on corrections.
The employee shall serve as a primary point of contact for the region specified by the Division.Perform Final Inspections, Certificate of Occupancy Determination, Issue Temporary Certificate of Occupancy or Certificate of CompletionPerforms onsite inspection to determine if the permitted structure meets the requirements of the applicable codes.
This includes, but is not limited to, confirming the number of stories, determining appropriate classification of construction type, evaluating means of egress components, evaluating fire-resistant rated assemblies, evaluating site and building accessibility, reviewing and collecting documentation that verifies all required subsidiary inspections have been performed and approved.Manages Workload, Professional Development, and Other Duties as Assigned
A minimum qualification for this position is possession of a current International Code Council (ICC) Commercial Building Inspector certificate.
The certification must be obtained prior to the first day of employment and selection preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate that they already have the certification.
