Job Description

Summary

This job involves inspecting construction sites for homes, apartments, businesses, and factories to ensure they follow local rules on grading, paving, landscaping, and stormwater management, while also handling reports and customer questions about development projects.

The role comes in three levels based on your experience, starting from entry-level up to more advanced inspection duties.

  • Valid driver’s license from state of residency
  • NPDES Level 1-B Erosion Control Inspector certification (obtain within 6 months of hire)
  • For Level I: 3 years of related construction experience (or equivalent)
  • For Level II: 5 years of related construction experience including 2 years in regulation enforcement/inspection (or equivalent)
  • For Level III: 7 years of related construction experience including 4 years in regulation enforcement/inspection (or equivalent); plus CPESC or Certified Arborist certification

Job Description
The function of Gwinnett County Department of Planning and Development is to promote and enhance the quality of life of residents, visitors, property owners and businesses of Gwinnett County. The Department accomplishes its mission through programs and services that encourage high quality development as well as maintenance and revitalization of existing neighborhoods. The Department consists of the following divisions: Development, Planning, Code Enforcement, Building, Customer Service, Housing and Community Development, Economic Development, Infrastructure Planning, and Administration. The Development Inspector position is assigned to the Development Inspections section of the Development Division.

Essential Duties
  • Conducting field inspections of residential, multifamily, commercial, and industrial land development sites which includes clearing, grading, paving, landscaping, and stormwater best management practices for compliance with the applicable approved plans, Federal, State, and County regulations and standards, and erosion and sediment control requirements.
  • Preparing reports, forms, citations, and other regulatory enforcement information, and documenting in the department databases.
  • Responding to inquiries and concerns received from developers, contractors, homeowners, and other customers pertinent to land development activities, applicable regulations and standards, erosion and sediment control requirements, and required corrective actions.
  • Hosts pre-construction meetings as needed with property owners/developers, contractors, and engineers to review plans, provide information concerning inspection process, and ensure all additional required permits have been issued.
  • Performing other duties that support the objectives of the Development Inspections Section.
Minimum Qualifications
Development Inspector I
  • High School Diploma, or G.E.D., AND three (3) years of related construction experience; OR
    • an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to competently perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Valid driver’s license from the state of residency.
  • NPDES Level 1-B Erosion Control Inspector certification must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
Development Inspector II
  • High School Diploma, or G.E.D., AND five (5) years of related construction experience to include two (2) years of regulation enforcement/inspection experience. OR
    • an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to competently perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Valid driver’s license from the state of residency.
  • NPDES Level 1-B Erosion Control Inspector certification must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
Development Inspector III
  • High School Diploma, or G.E.D., AND seven (7) years of related construction experience to include four (4) years of regulation enforcement/inspection experience; OR
    • an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to competently perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Valid driver’s license from the state of residency.
  • NPDES Level 1-B Erosion Control Inspector certification must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
  • Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) or Certified Arborist.

Salary and Grade
Salary will be dependent on education and experience.
Development Inspector I:
The grade for this position is B21(2).
The salary range for this position is: $40,900 - $53,170
