DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
This position's main responsibility is focused on ensuring workplace safety and promoting a culture of safety. This position manages, initiates, plans, develops and directs the technical and administrative activities of comprehensive safety programs for the City of Houston. In addition, it will be responsible for managing safety professionals and technical training course development and instruction. This position will develop and implement department specific safety procedures to ensure compliance with national, state, and local occupational health and safety regulations, perform program audits for internal monitoring of compliance with Administrative Policies 2-2, 2-14, 2-21, and any associated policies with the HR Occupational Risk Management division or City of Houston.

This leadership position will not only ensure compliance with safety regulations but also actively foster a safety-first mentality across the entire City. This leader has a strategic role in developing, implementing, and improving health and safety programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort in a normal office environment.

Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Seven years of progressively more complex/responsible administrative experience are required, with at least three of the years in a supervisory capacity.

A Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration or a field closely related to the work being performed may be substituted for two years of experience.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Valid driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston driving policy (A.P. 2-2).

Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who have the following:

  • A degree in Risk Management or Occupational Safety and Health.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) principles and practices, to include procedures for conducting on-site safety inspections required.
  • Possession of relevant Occupational Safety and Health designations is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of Excel and familiarity with business industry tools.
  • Proving track record with implementing innovative human resources programs or processes.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6**
