About the Position: This is a full-time civilian leadership and faculty position at the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) Department of Distance Education as provided under Title 10 USC.

Initial appointment may be up to three years, the first of which may be a trial period. The appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments thereafter.

Academic rank and salary will be based on the selectee's academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments.

Who May Apply: US Citizens This is a term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 3 years. Appointment may be extended in one- to five-year increments thereafter.

As a term employee you will be eligible for medical insurance, life insurance, retirement, dental and vision. You will be eligible to earn annual leave and sick leave.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Basic Requirements: Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position; or Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field; or Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants will be rated on the following: SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Knowledge of managing online education, to include the oversight of learning management systems, curriculum design, and student administration.

Demonstrated academic leadership experience managing personnel, budgets, and curriculum. Preference given to candidates with professional military education and/or graduate-level experience.

An advanced degree in areas related to the USAWC curriculum is preferred. Preference is given to candidates with an earned doctorate degree.

Demonstrated experience of involvement in professional networks and cross-organization collaboration. Knowledge of designing, developing, and teaching at the graduate level.

Preference given to candidates with evidence of academic credentials and with online, blended, and/or hybrid teaching experience.

A demonstrated ability of scholarly research in areas relevant to the USAWC curriculum. Major Duties:

  • Lead and manage a department of over 80 faculty and educational support staff (military, civilian, and contractor) focused on conducting online graduate-level professional military education.
  • Provide guidance and oversight of educational activities including the design, development, and execution of courses that meet the educational standards for professional military education, joint certification, and regional accreditation.
  • Promote department interests in support of USAWC educational objectives through demonstrated scholarship and service.
  • Foster innovation and collaboration within teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Recruit and develop experienced faculty and staff.
  • Manage an annual budget supporting high quality education.
