This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.
You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Dentist Basic Requirements A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry.
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
~AND~ Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients.
~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Preferred Experience: Care and treatment of veterans with compromised health conditions as it relates to periodontics and advanced periodontics.
Experience in oral surgical and non-surgical management of Temporo-Mandibular Dysfunction including fabrication of occlusal guards. Grade Determinations: Staff Dentist.
An individual that demonstrates the ability in the field of general dentistry or a dental specialty who is employed to perform the duties related to various professional activities of patient care and treatment without supervision.
In addition to meeting the basic requirements, applicants must demonstrate ability in the general practice of dentistry; be capable of assisting in maintaining accepted standards of professional care in VA facilities; and be capable of accepting full responsibility for the proper care and treatment of assigned patients.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity.

The Periodontist dental officer position is located at the North Battlefield VA Outpatient Clinic within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), VA Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center (HVAMC), under the Dental Service Line.
The Periodontist must document successful completion of a residency program in Periodontics.
He/she must be licensed and may be privileged to perform any or all the following duties: Comprehensive dental examination, consultation, diagnosis, and treatment planning including the use of radiographs, photographs, diagnostic tests, impressions, jaw relation records and diagnostic casts.
Preliminary diagnosis, initial treatment, or stabilization of oral manifestations of systemic disease.
Preventive dentistry services Periodontic procedures: scaling and root planning, full mouth debridement, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, gingival curettage, crown lengthening, localized delivery of chemotherapeutic agents, periodontal maintenance procedures.
Advanced Periodontal procedures: bone grafting, soft tissue grafting, regenerative techniques, surgical placement, and maintenance of dental implants.
Oral Surgery procedures: within scope of granted privileges. Evaluation and non-surgical management of Temporo-mandibular Dysfunction including fabrication of occlusal guards. Local anesthesia.
Management of pain Minor Orthodontics: within scope of granted privileges.
Prescriptions Consultation requests and responses Dental management of medically compromised patients The extent and complexity of each of the above privileges granted to a Periodontist is dependent on the experience and documented training of the individual which is established through credentialing and privileging.
