Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping dentists provide dental care to inmates in a Michigan prison, including assisting with clinic operations and possibly taking X-rays.

It requires working inside secure facilities with direct contact with prisoners for most of the day.

A good fit would be someone with entry-level dental assisting experience who is comfortable in a high-security environment and holds the necessary radiography certification.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Possession of radiography certification from a Michigan Board of Dentistry-approved program
  • For Dental Aide 7: One year of experience as a Dental Aide 6
  • For Dental Aide E8: Two years of dental aide experience, including one year at level 7
  • Ability to work 100% within secure correctional facility perimeter
  • Direct contact with prisoners for more than 50% of work time
  • No felony convictions (as per Department of Corrections policy)

This position assists the dentist in providing dental care to prisoners at the assigned correctional facility. The position may be assigned to perform duties at dental clinics in other facilities. The position assists with the overall operations of the dental clinic.
This position has a Selective Position Requirement (SPR) - Possession of a radiography certification which involves completion of a dental radiography course taught in a program approved by the Michigan Board of Dentistry, pursuant to the Board of Dentistry, Administrative Rule R338.11307.
This is a test-designated position (DART). This position has direct contact with prisoners for more than 50% of work time and is 100% located within the secure perimeter of a Correctional Facility.

One year of experience equivalent to a Dental Aide 6.

Two years of experience equivalent to a Dental Aide, including one year equivalent to a Dental Aide 7.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.

All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
