Full Job Description

Under the general direction and supervision of the Manager of Youth Services. The seasonal Educational Programming Library Associate prepares and presents innovative and engaging programs for youth at outreach locations, such as summer camps. The employee is responsible for recording relevant program data within the department and establishing a positive rapport with customers and outreach sites.

The physical demands consist mainly of moving from one work location to another, sitting or standing at a workstation for extended periods of time, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, reaching, and squatting, using standard office and library equipment on an ongoing basis and may be required to lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds and push-loaded book trucks weighing up to 50 pounds.

The work is performed under limited supervision where the work assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, techniques, and/or policies, and the employee plans and organizes the work, determines his/her own priorities, and the work is reviewed in terms of quality, volume, timeliness, and adherence to established procedures and policies.

This position is a 25 hour a week part-time position with employment during May – August 2026. Majority of hours will be scheduled during the regular work week. However, due to the nature of library operations, the employee may be required to work evenings and on weekends. The employee will be expected to travel within the city of Jacksonville. Mileage reimbursement is available.

Requirements

  • Initiates, plans, designs, prepares, and conducts a variety of programs and activities to encourage the use of the library by children and young adults, including, but not limited to, school and community outreach.
  • Works with the Youth Services Staff in preparation and presentation of programs and services for children and teens. Assists with ideas for programs and collects necessary materials. Reads, tell stories, performs puppet shows, and interacts closely with children.
  • Provides direct assistance to patrons with basic information regarding use of library materials, equipment, and services.
  • Circulates library materials. Answers reference questions. Research complex questions. Uses a variety of computer databases, electronic resources, and computer software packages.

    Has access to and maintains the integrity of confidential customer information. Interprets policy and explains procedures to the public.

    Responds to customer concerns and complaints and conducts conflict resolution.

  • Maintains and cultivates contact with the general community, the public, schools, teachers, other libraries, city employees.
  • Operates standard office and library equipment such as personal computers or mobile devices using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and other related software, peripheral and electronic devices, cash registers, copiers, fax machines, microfilm and microfiches equipment, and calculators.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville Core Competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of recreational and developmental needs of children and young adults along with the knowledge of community interests, trends, and resources and ability to use this information to determine library programming needs.
  • Ability to translate adults, young adults and children’s needs and interests into effective library services and programs.
  • Knowledge of library procedures, techniques, and policies.
  • Knowledge of library materials in various formats and materials appropriate for various ages and reading levels.
  • Knowledge of literature and reference materials.
  • Skill in organizing library materials and workflow.
  • Ability to recommend age-appropriate material.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade, educate, explain, and inform. Ability to prepare written reports.
  • Ability to solve problems.
  • Ability to research and evaluate library activities and library procedures.
  • Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records.
  • Ability to operate standard office and library equipment such as personal computers using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and other related software, peripheral and electronic devices, cash registers, copiers, fax machines, microfilm and microfiche equipment, and calculators.

    Dependent on assignment, ability to operate a motor vehicle.

    Additional Information

    • A Bachelors' Degree.
    • Three years of experience in administrative, clerical, retail, educational, or library support work.

    LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:

    • Depending on assignment, a valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
    • Depending on assignment, must qualify prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment a City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification.
