This job involves keeping City of Houston buildings and outdoor areas clean by mopping floors, vacuuming rugs, washing windows, emptying trash, and maintaining restrooms and equipment.
It's a hands-on role that may require driving between locations and adapting to different shifts.
A good fit would be someone reliable and physically able who enjoys routine maintenance work and doesn't mind getting their hands dirty, even without prior experience.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The General Services Department is seeking Custodians to perform janitorial services. The duties for this position include:
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.
This position requires working in a confined space such as a parking garage. There are routine discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions.
The position may involve routine exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Very fundamental levels of the ability to read, write and follow simple oral instructions as might normally be acquired through up to 8 years of formal schooling.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
No experience is required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: None
Applicants with experience in Microsoft Outlook and a Valid Texas Driver's License in compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving. (A.P. 2-2) are preferred.
Previous custodian experience as well as experience polishing, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors are greatly desired.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIREDThe selection process will involve application review and/or interview. The department may administer a skills assessment.
SAFETY IMPACT POSITION: YESThis position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
