Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading efforts to prevent suicides and handle crises within the Department of Defense by creating strategies, evaluating programs, and working with military and other organizations to improve support systems.

A good fit would be an experienced psychologist who understands public health approaches to mental health crises and has a background in policy development and collaboration across agencies.

The role focuses on non-clinical support for the military community, including topics like firearm safety.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-13 level in developing and implementing non-clinical suicide prevention and crisis response programs using public health approaches
  • Expertise in crisis response evaluation, including design, implementation, and translating findings into actionable strategies
  • Experience coordinating with DoD components, Military Services, and other government agencies, including participation in cross-agency working groups
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) with a major or equivalent in psychology; transcripts required

  • Skills in liaising with military, governmental, and non-governmental organizations on suicide prevention activities
  • Knowledge of analyzing research and modeling for crisis response systems, including implementation of improvements like lethal means safety

Full Job Description

This position is part of the Defense Human Resources Activity and will transition to the Defense Health Agency in FY27.

The incumbent will be responsible for crisis response initiatives and large-scale tracking across the Department of Defense (DoD) and with our public and private partners to identify evidenced based efforts that are applicable to the culture and practices of the DoD.

You may qualify at the GS-14, if you fulfill the following qualifications: A.

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service: Develops and implements non-clinical, suicide prevention and crisis response efforts in line with the Public Health approach to suicide prevention, with expertise in various strategic methods.

Develops and conducts crisis response evaluation development, design, implementation and translation of findings.

Coordinates and works with other DoD components, the Military Services, and/or other government agencies, to include serving on cross-agency or inter-agency working groups/committees.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

In addition to meeting qualifications, your application package must reflect the applicable experience to meet the Individual Occupational Requirements for the 0180 series.

Major or equivalent in psychology *NOTE: Failure to provide transcripts will result in you being rated ineligible for this position. Major Duties:

As a Crisis Response Psychologist at the GS-0180-14 some of your typical work assignments may include: Serve as a Subject Matter Expert in Crisis Response in the Suicide Prevention and Crisis Response operations directorate.

Develop strategies, advise on policies and training, and manage programs that increase the Department's Suicide Prevention and Crisis Response capabilities.

Liaise and manage relationships with members of the Military, governmental, and non-governmental organizations involved in Suicide Prevention and Crisis Response activities.

Provide expertise and support to operations specifically relevant to Suicide Prevention in the Military Community (i.e.

Lethal Means Safety/Firearm Safety) Analyze modelling and research around Crisis Response systems and lead implementation of improvements to Crisis Response modeling within the Department and Military components
