COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE
Our Mission is to perpetuate the wildlife resources of the state, to provide a quality state parks system, and to provide enjoyable and sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities that educate and inspire current and future generations to serve as active stewards of Colorado's natural resources.

Area 7 (5707) exists to perform wildlife management, wildlife education, law enforcement, public service duties in Mesa and Garfield counties.

The work unit also manages the Northwest Region Service Center (NWRSC) and State Wildlife Areas (SWA) within the same geographic area to provide wildlife habitat, wildlife recreational opportunities.

TheRegional Manager (RM), Deputy Regional Manager (DRM), Area Wildlife Managers (AWM), District Wildlife Managers (DWM), Wildlife Technicians (WT), Customer Service Representatives/Administrative Assistants (CSR), biologists (Bio), and other agency staff (i.e.

both statewide and regional) to perform the work within the NWRSC/Area 7 and to provide these services to the public.

Requirements

This position primarily serves the NWRSC and Area 7 staff and buildings, including the maintenance of interior and exterior buildings, Grand Junction West Lake SWA, Leatha Jean Stassen SWA, chronic wasting disease/mandatory check facility along with volunteers and staff, lawn maintenance, snow removal and administrative functions within the unit.

This position is the lead for ensuring safe conditions for customers and for staff through maintaining grounds, facilities, and landscaping.

The position will work to develop habitat for wildlife at local SWA’s.

Habitat Management

Enhances and improves wildlife habitat on SWAs utilizing various tools such as mechanical tree mastication, hand clearing of trees, prescribed burns, noxious weed treatment, tillage and spring/water development.

Inspect signage and fences and ensure that minimum standards for properties are being met.

Develop multi-year plans for habitat projects in coordination with AWM, DWMs and Bios. Develop relationships with key stakeholders and neighboring landowners. Procure funding for habitat projects through the use of grants, both internal and external. Utilize grant funds for habitat enhancement projects on SWA’s. Participate in the State bid process to engage vendors for habitat projects.

Water Management

Fully utilizes all water rights owned by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). Reports and records all use of water rights. Improves and maintains all infrastructure associated with water rights.


Equipment and Facilities Management
Procurement, repair and maintenance of all NWRSC structures, facilities and equipment, including the Hunter Education building, indoor shooting range, 3 separate office buildings, storage yards/structures/buildings, utility services (i.e. water, sewer, cameras, electricity, EV stations, etc.). Maintenance of landscaping, lawns, shelters and snow removal at the NWRSC.

Administrative Functions
Monitor expenses, track budget, make purchasing decisions, prepare reports, develop work plans, apply for and administer grant applications, coordinate with CSR’s and function as front desk help during busy periods. Recruit, hire and support temporary workers and volunteers and manage CWD and mandatory animal check programs at the NWRSC.

Minimum QualificationsFour (4) years of relevant experience in agriculture management, natural resource management, facility/building operations, grounds management. construction management.

Appropriate education in construction or project management, natural resources, environmental science, recreation management, business or a related field of study will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Current or former State experience relevant to the position.
  • Current or former CPW work or volunteer experience.
  • Experience managing detailed records and quality control of data.
  • Experience with agricultural practices and associated machinery/tools. Experience with building maintenance and associated tools, plumbing and electrical work. Noxious weed spraying experience.
  • Knowledge and abilities with wildlife habitat improvements, mitigations, and manipulations.
  • Experience with reporting water use and irrigation.
  • Knowledge of noxious weeds and spraying.
  • A commercial driver's license or ability to obtain one.

Conditions of Employment

    CPW will pay for this certification and requires it shortly after hiring.This position will require but is not limited to the handling of pesticides, fertilizer, equipment batteries, gasoline, diesel, paint, and motor oil.

  • Position will be required to work some weekends and long/odd hours.
  • Essential Services Designation – Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.

  • Occasional travel and overnight stays are required for training, etc.
  • Use of Firearms or Other Weapons – May be required to assist other Area officers, and dispatch injured wildlife
  • Experience operating tools, OHVs, heavy equipment, tractor, etc.
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify their application from the current position.
