Requirements

Under general supervision, properly classifies inmates and detainees within the Department of Corrections and recommends these persons for appropriate treatment and rehabilitation programs.

  • Screens and evaluates defendants sentenced to the Department of Corrections as well as those incarcerated and awaiting trial.
  • Recommends proper classification of inmates and detainees within the Department of Corrections based on the interviewing and evaluation process.
  • Coordinates the delivery of treatment services to prospective defendants.
  • Refers individuals to various treatment and/or rehabilitation programs, which may include appropriate drug and alcohol treatment for proper evaluation and follow-up treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, or social workers.
  • Re-evaluates defendants periodically for proper placement in other custody sections of the Department of Corrections.
  • Creates and manages case files.
  • Maintains statistical data and evaluation and treatment progress reports on all defendants assigned to the counselor's caseload.
  • Prepares written reports on treatment and evaluation of particular defendants for outside agencies.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in a social or behavioral science or criminal justice.

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.

Additional Information

During the first year of employment, the employee must receive certification as a correctional officer from the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.

Persons appointed to this classification may work on either a rotating or fixed shift basis, which may include nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime when scheduled.

Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification is essentially sedentary. Some positions may involve occasional travel between work sites.

Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation
Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprinting checks.
