Job Description

Summary

This job is for a cook in a child and youth services program at Fort Meade, where you'll help plan and prepare healthy meals for kids following federal nutrition guidelines.

It involves hands-on cooking tasks like chopping ingredients, grilling meats, and baking, while also training other staff and supporting youth cooking activities.

Key Requirements

  • At least 6 months of work experience in food preparation using professional kitchen appliances and equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Capacity to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. on a routine basis
  • Knowledge of USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) policies and procedures
  • Skills in preparing a variety of foods including meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, stews, casseroles, gravies, sauces, and baked goods using standard recipes
  • Experience assisting with menu planning, food ordering, and purchase requests
  • Ability to provide on-the-job training to kitchen staff and consult for youth cooking clubs or health programs

This position is located at Fort Meade, Maryland.

Child and Youth Services (CYS) Employee Childcare Fee: *CYS Regular and FLEX employees (working a minimum of 15 hours) First Child: 100% childcare fee discount (all CYS employees) Second and Subsequent Child: 25% childcare fee discount (all CYS employees)} Incentives and Bonuses Incentives will not be paid.

A qualified candidate must possess the following: A minimum of 6 months of work experience directly related to the duties described above, that included skill in working with professional kitchen appliances and equipment.

Be able to communicate (verbal and written) in English. Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. on a routine basis. Major Duties:

  • Applies knowledge and skill to assist in planning and implementing a comprehensive food service program that follows the policies and procedures of the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
  • Performs a variety of food preparation and cooking tasks such as cleaning, paring, peeling, slicing, dicing; grilling, frying, baking broiling, pouring liquids and mixing ingredients.
  • Prepares and cooks a variety of more complicated/time consuming foods such as meats poultry, seafood, vegetables, stews, casseroles, gravies, sauces, and baked goods following standard recipes.
  • Works with Food and Nutrition Specialists to prepare menus and submit food orders and purchase requests.
  • Assist with "on the job training" of other kitchen staff members and serves as consultant to youth cooking clubs/health and fitness programs as required, and follows risk management procedures.
