Job Description

Summary

This job is for a cook at a middle school and teen center on a military base, where you'll prepare healthy meals for kids and teens following strict food program rules.

You'll handle everything from basic chopping and cooking to making more complex dishes like stews and baked goods, while helping train other staff and supporting youth cooking activities.

It's a great fit for someone with hands-on kitchen experience who enjoys working with children and can handle physical tasks in a team setting.

Key Requirements

  • At least 6 months of work experience in food preparation and cooking using professional kitchen equipment
  • Strong English communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. routinely
  • Knowledge of USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) policies and procedures
  • Skills in a variety of cooking techniques including grilling, frying, baking, and preparing meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, and baked goods
  • Ability to collaborate with food specialists on menu planning, food orders, and purchase requests
  • Experience assisting with on-the-job training of kitchen staff and supporting youth programs

Full Job Description

This position is located at Fort Bragg Middle School & Teen Center. MWR CYS Employee Childcare Fee Discounts Available to MWR CYS Regular and FLEX (working a minimum of 15 hours per week).

A qualified candidate must possess the following: A minimum of 6 months of work experience directly related to the duties described above, that included skill in working with professional kitchen appliances and equipment.

Be able to communicate (verbal and written) in English. Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. on a routine basis. Major Duties:

  • Applies knowledge and skill to assist in planning and implementing a comprehensive food service program that follows the policies and procedures of the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).
  • Performs a variety of food preparation and cooking tasks such as cleaning, paring, peeling, slicing, dicing; grilling, frying, baking broiling, pouring liquids and mixing ingredients.
  • Prepares and cooks a variety of more complicated/time consuming foods such as meats poultry, seafood, vegetables, stews, casseroles, gravies, sauces, and baked goods following standard recipes.
  • Works with Food and Nutrition Specialists to prepare menus and submit food orders and purchase requests.
  • Assist with "on the job training" of other kitchen staff members and serves as consultant to youth cooking clubs/health and fitness programs as required, and follows risk management procedures.
