Requirements

As a Chemist 2, you will support the accreditation of environmental laboratories by conducting technical evaluations, ensuring compliance with state and national standards, and contributing to the oversight of laboratory operations across multiples testing areas.

You will be responsible for conducting assessments of environmental laboratories, reviewing personnel qualifications, equipment, methodologies, and quality assurance practices.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate with internal teams and external partners, including regulatory and enforcement agencies, during investigations or legal proceedings.

Work also involves developing and maintaining standard operating procedures, evaluation tools, and accreditation documentation; evaluating laboratory performance, including proficiency testing results, and preparing detailed assessments reports and follow-up correspondence; as well as determining laboratory compliance with accreditation standards and recommending actions.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical guidance and support to laboratories regarding regulatory requirements and best practices
  • Participating in program audits, meetings, and continuous improvement efforts
  • Maintaining expertise in analytical areas such as microbiology, organics, metals, radiochemistry, and inorganic chemistry
  • Attending training and maintaining required certifications, including NELAP and USEPA Drinking Water Laboratory Assessor credentials

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Travel is required to attend trainings, testify at hearings, and to perform on site assessments.
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week.

    In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.

    If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $59,345.00 (before taxes).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as a Chemist 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) ;or
  • One year of professional chemical analytical experience, and a bachelor’s degree that includes 30 credits in chemistry or biochemistry; or
  • A graduate degree in chemistry.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.


Conditions of Employment:

  • This position requires possession of a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.
