Full Job Description

The Marion County Public Defender Agency hires 2nd year law students who have completed the required prerequisites of Professional Responsibility and have at least half of their law school credits.

These students apply for certification through the Indiana State Board of Law Examiners and once certified, appear in Court in all pretrial matters, trial, and sentencing hearings with the supervision of a practicing Public Defender.

Requirements

Task Statements include preparing legal documents, memorandums, briefs, and motions on given issues for Public Defender's approval and filing.

Also, researching legal issues to effectively present the clients position, help Public Defenders interview victims, witnesses, and police officers to prepare cases for trial and/or plea agreements.

They would also appear in Court supervised by Public Defenders to conduct preliminary matters in Court, such as bond reductions, initial hearings, pre-trials and plea agreements.

In addition, appears in Court, supervised by Public Defenders, to represent the clients at jury trials, court trials, or in more complicated preliminary matters.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications are that they must be a 2nd year law student and have completed the required prerequisites of Professional Responsibility. Also, must have ability to utilize computer technology.
