Job Description

Summary

This job is for trainees in the Houston Fire Department who will undergo intensive training in firefighting and emergency medical response to become certified firefighters and/or EMTs.

It involves participating in classroom sessions, practical drills, and hands-on exercises in areas like fire suppression, rescue operations, and medical care.

Ideal candidates are motivated individuals under 36 years old with existing certifications in firefighting or EMT services, who are physically fit and ready for a demanding academy program.

Key Requirements

  • Must be under 36 years of age per Texas Local Government Code Chapter 143.023
  • Active Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Firefighter Certification and/or active Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification
  • Pass all phases of the hiring process, including physical ability test, interview, background check, immunizations, drug screen, and medical examination
  • Provide immunization and shot records prior to job offer
  • No felony or Class A misdemeanor convictions, or community supervision/probation
  • Willingness to participate in a 6-week fast-track training academy with classroom lectures, seminars, practical sessions, drills, and instruction in fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services

CERTIFIED FIRE FIGHTER TRAINEE and/or EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN
HOUSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT

Requirements

The Houston Fire Department is the 3rd largest municipal fire department in the United States and the World’s largest accredited municipal fire agency and the time to join is NOW!

Per Chapter 143.023 of the Tex. Loc. Gov’t code, a person may not be certified as eligible for a beginning position in the fire department if the person is 36 years of age or older. Below are the minimum requirements:

1. An active Texas Commission of Fire Protection (TCFP) Firefighter Certification and/or
2. An active Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) Emergency Medical Technician Certification

Participates in classroom lectures, seminars, and practical training sessions as directed by the Houston Fire Department.
  • Receives and participates in various types of training in fire suppression and emergency medical services up to and including paramedic certification.
  • Participates in drills, demonstrations, and instruction in hydraulics, pump operation, maintenance, fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services.

NOTES:
  1. Training Academy fast track class is approximately 6 weeks.
  2. Texas Commission of Fire Protection State Fire Fighters Certification and/or Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) Emergency Medical Technician Certification(s) will be subject to verification by the Human Resources Department.
  3. Texas Department of State Health Services Emergency Medical Technicians Certification as a Paramedic will be subject to verification by the Human Resources Department.
  4. Any falsification in the application process will result in disqualification.
  5. Applicants must pass and complete all phases of the hiring process (physical ability test, interview, background, immunizations, drug screen, medical examination).
  6. Immunizations/shot records will be required prior to receiving a job offer.
  7. HFD reserves the right to discontinue consideration in the hiring process based on an applicant conduct or verification of certain disqualifying factors.
  8. Must not have ever been convicted of or received community supervision or probation for a Felony or a Class A Misdemeanor.
