Requirements

This position is part of Region 2’s North Program based in Colorado Springs, CO. This position performs supportive duties for Engineers in construction testing and inspection.

The position ensures that materials incorporated into projects are in compliance with the contract of plans and specifications and conducts inspections of construction projects to ensure that contractor’s work is in conformance with construction plans and specifications.

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Works with the Professional Engineer to create a complete set of plans, specifications and estimates for engineering construction projects;
  • Prepares construction plans including notes, details, tabulations, plans and profile, and cross section sheets;
  • Incorporates plan sets from other sources into the plan package;
  • Chooses appropriate M&S standards and project details, as well as standard special provisions to be included in the construction project plan set and compiles project special provisions requested by specialty units;
  • Drafts project special provisions as required by the project;
  • Evaluates CDOT and AASHTO design criteria under direction from the supervisor, and then designs horizontal and vertical alignments that are both economical and efficient in achieving the improvement goals of the project;
  • Performs field visits to identify potential design obstacles and challenges that need to be considered;
  • Communicate project-specific information, design details, plan sheets, quantities, and field data with Right of Way, Survey, Environmental, Materials, Bridge, Geotechnical, Traffic, and other specialty units.

    Provide the information necessary for these groups to determine project requirements and develop recommendations pertaining to their specialties.

  • Obtain information needed to complete roadway design. Ensure the concerns of specialty units and outside agencies are addressed in the roadway design.
  • Communicate with Right of Way staff to obtain survey data, convey right of way requirements and obtain information about features or requirements negotiated with landowners.
  • Create project files and input project information, bid items and quantities into the bid management system.
  • Assist with directing the work of consultants providing design engineering services, such as identifying tasks and developing work objectives to meet project needs and timeframes.
  • Develop task orders for Professional Engineer review and assist with monitoring work as it progresses to ensure compliance with CDOT procedures, design standards, and work processes.
  • Using earthwork and spreadsheet computer software to calculate and tabulate quantities of materials required to complete construction of project
  • Participate in formal/classroom type training courses, webinars and seminars to acquire and enhance knowledge and skills required to design transportation projects and participates in informal and on-the job training;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • Work hours will generally occur during standard business hours and may vary based on operational needs.
  • This position is required to travel during the workday to assigned projects to conduct field investigations. Travel for meetings and training. Occasional overnight travel.
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles.

Qualifications

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Five (5) years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position

Substitutions

Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Condition of Employment

  • A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
