Job Description
Summary
This job is for a Captain at a South Carolina prison, where you'll lead and oversee correctional officers and inmates to keep everyone safe and secure.
You'll manage daily operations, assign staff to shifts, and work with other teams to blend security with rehabilitation efforts.
It's a good fit for someone with experience in corrections, law enforcement, or the military who has led teams and wants to step into a supervisory role in a high-stakes environment.
Key Requirements
- High school diploma required
- Six years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work
- Two years of supervisory experience in a relevant field
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience (year for year)
- Must complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy
- Must successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six months of hire
Full Job Description
- Directs and supervises the day-to-day operations and activities of the uniformed staff and inmates.
- Ensures the security and safety of all staff, inmates, and visitors.
- Under minimum supervision and guided by written policies and procedures, allocates officers and other resources to various duty shifts and functional areas.
- Coordinates with institutional classification and treatment staff to ensure effective integration of all security/treatment operations and activities.
Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and relevant supervisory experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required supervisory experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A high school diploma and six (6) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include two (2) years of supervisory experience.
- A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 2 year).
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
