Job Description

Summary

This job involves overseeing library building projects across 41 locations in Hennepin County, including design, space planning, managing relationships with contractors, and handling inventory and furnishings.

It also supports staff on youth services and requires promoting a respectful team environment while staying current with modern library trends to enhance user experiences.

A good fit would be someone with strong project management skills, experience in facilities or construction, and a passion for libraries who can lead teams effectively.

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or related field plus five or more years of relevant experience, or nine or more years of general administrative experience in operations management

Full Job Description

Hennepin County Library (HCL) is seeking an experienced Capital Projects Manager to work on Library building projects throughout the 41 county library locations.

This position is responsible for library design, space planning and management, relationship management, inventory control and library furnishings, and will also serve as a resource for staff and administration in the areas of youth services.

This position reports to the Library Capital Projects and Operations Senior Administrative Manager and serves as a member of the Library's Senior Team.

This opportunity requires a manager who can motivate staff towards a common vision and do so in a way that creates, promotes and maintains a work environment in which all are respected.

An awareness of 21st century library trends and how these trends can be applied to provide an innovative patron experience for Hennepin County residents is also critical.



Location and hours:

This position is hybrid, based out of the Ridgedale Library, 12601 Ridgedale Drive, Minnetonka, MN 55305, will perform work at other library locations throughout Hennepin County, and remote as job duties require.

Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., with flexibility.

While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

This is a full-time benefit earning position. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of the Hennepin County Library department to apply for this position. Limited duration employees not eligible.

This position is internally classified as an Administrative Assistant, Principal.

In this position, you will:
  • Provide expertise and advice regarding library services to consultants and others involved in the construction, remodeling, repair and maintenance of existing libraries.
  • Provide conceptual and functional facility and space analysis/planning.
  • Assist in developing feasibility studies, cost studies and technical specifications for design, construction, operation and/or maintenance modifications of facilities.
  • Assist in the preparation of project descriptions and budgets, prepare bid specifications and evaluate bids for projects, and make recommendations for contract award.
  • Review construction documents for accuracy and review shop drawings.
  • Attend project progress meetings as well as periodically visit project sites and observe work activities while monitoring changes affecting quality, cost and schedule.

Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in business administration or other field appropriate to the position and five or more years of experience related to the position.
    • Nine or more years of experience in general administrative work related to the management of departmental/organizational operations or in a specialty area appropriate to the position.
      • General administrative work is defined as the administration and/or management of programs, policies, and/or budgets.

Nice to have:
  • Experience:
    • Leading or participating in a collaborative planning process.
    • Facilitating meetings as a project manager or project representative.
    • Managing multiple, concurrent projects.
    • In overall operations, maintenance and repair of furniture and fixtures that includes customer relations and experience working with skilled and unskilled trades.
  • Knowledge of architecture, space analysis techniques, and interior design and the principals of project management that include group dynamics.
  • Ability to:
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
    • Read and understand construction documents and shop drawings.
    • Plan, schedule and coordinate concurrent projects.
    • Conduct conceptual planning and programming for specialty areas, design, draw and interpret presentation graphics.
