Travis County’s Office of Security & Protection is looking for a senior security professional who takes pride in creating a safe, welcoming, and well-protected environment. The Building Security Guard Sr. provides physical security across County facilities including employee, property, and asset protection. Includes post assignment, patrolling, and monitoring activities on County properties, mitigating criminal actions while promoting a safe and secure environment. Provides administrative and operational support to direct supervisors. May temporarily perform the duties and responsibilities of Building Security Guard Supervisor/Coordinator when required. In addition to performs core duties and responsibilities of Security Guard, this role contributes elevated expertise and decision-making essential to security operations. Physical security operations are proactive operations and are conducted 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, including normal, weekend, and holiday hours.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This classification is responsible for front-line property/facility security functions and operations and has senior-level duties and responsibilities. This classification may require a flexible work schedule to meet departmental and County needs.

Requirements

  • Performs duties and responsibilities in the absence of the Building Security Supervisor/Coordinator.
  • Facilitates effective communications between the Building Security Supervisor/Coordinator and Building Security Guard, including information and intelligence-related data sharing.
  • Provides mentorship, coaching and technical guidance to entry level Security Guard.
  • Reviews, interprets and applies all County-wide post and patrol orders and security protocols, ensuring compliance and recommending updates when necessary.
  • Responds to duress, fire, and security alarms and notifies emergency dispatch and other emergency personnel if appropriate.
  • Conducts patrolling and post operations including following all orders as specified per assignment.
  • Secures, manages, and screens entrance and county facilities against trespassing and illegal entry.
  • Observes employees and other persons in, around, and entering County properties for criminal acts or acts of improper or questionable behaviors.
  • Investigates disturbances, requests compliance of violators, notifies the communications center and supervisor of any situation if assistance is needed, and reports any security incidents.
  • Monitors video cameras/displays and accesses control units, including reporting of any malfunctioning equipment.
  • Mitigates theft, fire, and other loss or damage of county properties.
  • Provides security and assistance to the public and various law enforcement agencies.
  • Communicates security related issues, including emergencies and concerns per procedures via immediate verbal notification to emergency and Division communication centers and/or written incident reports.
  • Visual and operational inspection the function of windows, doors (including access card readers), lights, water systems, and environmental equipment (HVAC).
  • Reports non-functioning and/or damaged equipment, property damage (including vandalism) and theft, and water leaks.
  • May perform first aid as necessary.
  • May perform traffic, parking, and crowd control actions.
  • Attends training and certification courses as needed and as required by the Department, in order to maintain certifications and skills necessary to perform the job.
  • Screens people and property for prohibited items at various locations.
  • May perform duties as a Field Training Guard (FTG), providing structured training, evaluation and skills development for new personnel.
  • Conducts patrolling in County vehicles and post operations including following all orders as specified per assignment under duties and responsibilities.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned including special assignments as directed by supervisors.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years of providing direct security services, including lead or supervisory experience in the public and/or private sector.

OR,

Any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the job.


Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:

  • Must maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Must maintain CJIS security clearance
  • Must be flexible to work and provide assistance to other work shifts

Applicants are required to successfully pass the background investigation, including fingerprint clearance.

Preferred:

Graduation from a two (2) year technical school, an Associate degree in a related or applicable field, or other related certified security training.

Knowledge of:

  • Advanced physical security tactics, techniques, and operational procedures.

  • Security communication and radio protocols and procedures.

  • Facility electronic video monitoring and access control systems.

  • Effective de-escalation techniques and conflict-management principles

  • Safety/security practices, emergency response frameworks, and regulatory compliance requirements.

Skill in:

  • Prioritizing and multitasking.
  • Accurate situations assessments; including recognizing and distinguishing between emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Clear and effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communications; including clearly and concisely. communicating rules, policies, procedures, situational concerns, de-escalation and conflict resolution techniques, and report writing.
  • Developing and delivering training on security procedures, emergency response, and customer-service standards.
  • Positive and reinforcing customer service techniques.

Ability to:

  • Identify and report security risks and threats and facility and equipment repairs.
  • Effectively use provided communication devices, including two-way radios and mobile telephones.
  • Follow directions and/or independently operate or test security equipment, including metal detectors and x-ray machines.
  • Physically perform industry standard security assignments, including day, evening, and night post and walking and driving patrols.

Additional Information

Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 25 pounds, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity.

Subject to standing, walking, sitting, repetitive motion, reaching, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, pulling, balancing, client/customer contact, squatting to perform the essential functions.

Requires constant walking and standing and exposure to outside elements.

Travis County employees play an important role in business continuity. As such, employees can be assigned to business continuity efforts outside of normal job functions.

Work Hours: Must be flexible to work at AM/PM/Overnight.

$1.50 Shift differential for PM and Overnight hours.

Works some holidays, some nights, and some weekends.
