Job Description

Summary

This job involves maintaining and repairing heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and related systems in large city buildings to keep them running smoothly and safely.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience as a skilled HVAC technician who enjoys troubleshooting equipment and can handle emergency fixes, even on nights or weekends.

It's ideal for detail-oriented people who like working with tools and systems in a government setting.

Key Requirements

  • Completion of an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration certificate from a community college, trade school, or equivalent apprenticeship program (proof required)
  • Three years of full-time paid journey-level experience in operating, repairing, and maintaining heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, and related equipment in large structures
  • At least one year of experience specifically with operating and maintaining a large central air conditioning system
  • EPA Universal Certification for handling high and low-pressure refrigerants (proof required)
  • Ability to read and troubleshoot electrical system schematics
  • Experience with computerized building automation control systems
  • Willingness to work irregular schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Valid driver's license

Requirements

Under direction, operates, maintains, repairs, and adjusts the heating, instrument lighting, air conditioning, ventilating, refrigeration, water treatment, pneumatic control, fire life safety, and other systems; operates, repairs and maintains control panels, compressors, pumps, and exhaust fans; calibrates and installs thermostats; repairs, maintains and makes emergency repairs to low-pressure steam/hot water boilers and to water, air and refrigeration systems and lines; cleans tubes and tests valves, gauges and other equipment; installs replacement parts and makes minor additions or modifications to existing equipment; performs minor plumbing and electrical repair work on related subsystem equipment; keeps charts and makes oral and written reports; orders and receives supplies; may supervise maintenance personnel; may operate a computerized energy and building maintenance management system, and performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Completion of an Air Conditioning and Refrigeration certificate program from a community college, trade school, or equivalent union-approved HVAC and Refrigeration apprenticeship program (proof required). *

AND

Three (3) years full-time equivalent paid journey-level experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, and related equipment of a large structure, which must include one year in the operation and maintenance of a large central air conditioning system.

AND

An Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated Universal Certification for the handling of high and low-pressure refrigerants (proof required.) *

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Ability to read/troubleshoot from electrical system schematics and experience with computerized building automation control systems.

Willingness to work an irregular schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

A valid driver's license and a current DMV record must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of selection.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with large (100,000+ sq. ft) and/or high-rise structures, large central plant systems, and pneumatic controls. Bilingual/Biliterate skills (Spanish, Khmer, or Tagalog) are desired for some positions.

Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. This selection procedure will be conducted using a continuous non-competitive process, which means applications are evaluated solely on training, experience, education, or certification. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list. Applicants receiving Veteran’s Credit will be placed on the eligible list first and then in the order in which applications were filed. This is a continuous eligible list, which means eligible lists may be established periodically and may expire six months from their effective date. Applicants may apply only once during a four-month period. Applications received by July 15, 2025, will be placed on Test #01 established eligible list.
