This job involves going out to building sites in Pasadena to check that homes, apartment buildings, and small commercial structures meet safety and local rules for construction, wiring, plumbing, and more.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply design and construction plans, calculations, and reports

Full Job Description

The City of Pasadena is looking for a Building Inspector II to perform field inspections of residential, mulit-family, and minor commercial buildings and structures, and their electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems to verify compliance with state and local building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and zoning codes and ordinances.

IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate has experience in conducting building inspections for a governmental jurisdiction, inspecting architectural, structural, and accessibility compliance for commercial and residential occupancies; has the ability to work in a lead capacity, is detail-oriented, dependable, and has excellent decision-making ability.

The candidate should be thoroughly familiar with the California Building Code Standards (Title-24 of the California Code of Regulations and Cal Green standards) and construction methods for a variety of construction types.

Ability to read, interpret, and apply general and detailed information on design and construction plans, calculations, and reports.

The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills and thorough knowledge of the principles, methods and safety hazards related to conducting building inspections.

Experience with the use of electronic devices including handheld devices and software for permitting and plan reading is highly desirable.

  • Interprets plans and specifications and makes field inspections of residential, including multi-family residential, commercial buildings and structures to verify that construction, alterations, or repairs are being performed according to approved building plans and specifications and in compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and zoning codes and relevant ordinances.
  • Performs investigations of violations and prepares reports of findings; makes appropriate recommendations.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical example of this would be:

  • AA/AS in Building Construction Inspection, or four years of construction experience is required.
  • Three years of experience with a public agency as an inspector performing combination inspections.
  • I.C.C. certificate as a residential building inspector or residential combination inspector, and commercial inspector.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Graduation from a recognized college with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree in Building Construction Inspection, or any combination of education equivalent to completion of 30 college semester units in engineering, architecture, or building inspection is highly desirable but not required.

Additional Information

A Building Inspector II (Combination) must provide an operable motor vehicle for the purpose of performing field inspections and other related duties. Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required.
