Job Description

Summary

This job involves operating, maintaining, and repairing industrial boilers in a prison setting while training and supervising inmates to build their skills for life after release.

You'll also enforce security rules and ensure a safe environment.

It's a good fit for someone with hands-on experience in boiler systems who is patient, reliable, and comfortable working in a correctional facility.

Key Requirements

  • Experience operating and maintaining high-pressure steam and hot water boilers, including combustion systems and pressure vessels
  • Skills in installing, troubleshooting, and repairing boiler systems, pumps, motors, steam traps, and pressure regulators
  • Knowledge of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Codes and local/state boiler regulations
  • Ability to provide training and supervision to inmates in boiler operations and trade principles
  • Proficiency in enforcing security regulations and performing inmate supervision in a prison environment
  • Experience with preventative maintenance on machinery and troubleshooting problems
  • Working knowledge of evacuating and recharging air conditioning systems (preferred)

Are you looking for full-time year-round employment and want to enjoy 12 paid holidays each year? If so, the Utah Department of Corrections is looking for a Boiler Specialist to work in their Salt Lake City, Utah, Correctional Facility.


The Boiler Specialist will perform the following:
  • Provide training and supervision of inmates in Boiler Operations at a prison facility.
  • Ensure inmates are helped to become team-oriented with the goal to enable them to succeed outside of the prison environment.
  • Enforce security regulations and perform inmate supervision.
Successful candidates will possess:
  • Experience with Industrial Boilers: Operating and maintaining high-pressure steam and hot water boilers, combustion systems, and high-pressure vessels.
  • System Maintenance: Expertise in installing and maintaining steam, condensate, and hydronic heating piping, as well as steam traps and pressure regulators.
  • Mechanical Proficiency: Skilled in inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing boiler systems, including pump and motor maintenance.
  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Codes and Local/State Boiler Codes.

Health Insurance - Public Employee Health Program (PEHP):

  • 3 medical plan options. Choose a Traditional or High Deductible Health Plan. There is an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those who have other medical insurance coverage.
  • 5 dental plan options, with an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those that have other dental insurance coverage.

Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS):

  • Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.
  • Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System.
    • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))
    • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.

Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.

Paid Time Off:

  • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
  • Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.
We have 12 paid holidays.

Requirements

  • Boiler Operations: Operates and maintains high/low pressure steam, electric, and other boiler types.

  • Maintenance & Repair: Troubleshoots problems, performs preventative maintenance on machinery, and preference will be given for candidates who can evacuates/recharges air conditioning systems working knowledge.

  • Instruction: Teaches inmates principles and techniques of the trade, including adherence to industry and safety standards.

  • Electrical/Controls: Performs basic diagnostics on electrical circuits, instrumentation, sensors, and control panels .

  • Security: Prepares inmate incident and disciplinary reports and manages inmate movement

Qualifications

  • Experience: 2-5+ years of experience in industrial boiler operation, maintenance, or repair.

  • Certifications: Preference for OSHA Safety Certification, NFPA credentials, and EPA 608 Certification.

  • Safety Standards: Knowledge of Lockout/Tagout procedures, confined space entry, and hazardous energy control.

  • Communication: Ability to speak clearly, listen effectively, and read/interpret blueprints and technical manuals.

Additional Information

  • Physical Demands: Requires strenuous physical exertion, including frequent climbing of ladders, lifting objects over 50 pounds, and crouching or crawling in restricted areas.

  • Background Check: Selected applicants must undergo a full background investigation, which may include a polygraph.

  • Driver License: Subject to Driver Eligibility standards

  • Environmental Risks: Exposure to heat, steam, noise, chemicals, and extreme outdoor weather.
